Newcastle Nears €60m Deal for Johan Manzambi as Villa Miss Out

Newcastle United are on the brink of landing one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders, with Sky Germany reporting that a €60m fee has been agreed with Freiburg for 20-year-old Johan Manzambi.

All major points of the deal between the clubs are said to be settled. Newcastle are now working through the final details with the player’s camp, with Manzambi expected to sign a long-term contract on Tyneside.

Aston Villa had pushed hard. Amadou Onana’s ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup forced them into the market for a high-calibre midfielder, and Manzambi quickly emerged as a leading target. Villa’s interest was serious, but the race has tilted decisively towards Newcastle.

You can see why both clubs moved. Manzambi has used this summer’s tournament as a global showcase: three goals and two assists for Switzerland have underlined his ability to influence games at the highest level. Before that, he had already built a compelling case in the Bundesliga, scoring five times and supplying four assists in 27 league appearances for Freiburg last season.

Right now, though, Switzerland are having to cope without him. Manzambi is sidelined for the national team, missing their World Cup quarter-final against Argentina after they edged past Colombia on penalties.

If Newcastle complete this move, they will be paying elite money for a 20-year-old who has already carried club and country through big moments. The next question is simple: can he turn that promise into Premier League dominance at St James’ Park?
