Napoli's Marianucci Suffers Serious Knee Injury in Pre-Season

Napoli’s summer under new head coach Massimiliano Allegri has taken an early and brutal hit. Luca Marianucci, the young centre-back hoping to force his way into the first team, has suffered a serious injury to his left knee that is expected to keep him out for a lengthy spell.

The 22-year-old was introduced as a substitute in last weekend’s 1-1 friendly draw against Celta Vigo, only to leave the pitch just 25 minutes later. What initially looked like an awkward incident has now been confirmed as something far more damaging.

After a series of diagnostic tests at the Pineta Grande Hospital, Napoli released an official medical statement outlining the extent of the problem. The club confirmed that Marianucci sustained a high-grade medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee, following a contusion and sprain suffered in the Celta Vigo match.

For Marianucci, it is a cruel interruption at the very moment his Napoli career seemed ready to start. The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Torino, using that spell to build rhythm and experience in Serie A. Back in Naples and working under Allegri, he was pushing to climb the pecking order in a defence being reshaped for the 2026-27 campaign.

Since joining from Empoli in 2025, Marianucci has managed just two appearances for the Partenopei. This pre-season was his window to convince a new coach, to turn promise into minutes. Now that chance is on hold.

For Allegri, the injury lands at exactly the wrong time. Pre-season is when a backline is built, when partnerships are tested and trust is formed. Losing a physically imposing, left-sided option narrows his choices as he tries to construct a solid foundation before the competitive action begins.

Napoli’s medical staff will now oversee a carefully managed recovery process, weighing up whether Marianucci will require surgery or if a conservative rehabilitation plan can bring him back. The club has not provided a precise timeline, but the description of “high-grade” ligament damage points to an extended absence.

On the pitch, the calendar offers no sympathy. Napoli open their Serie A campaign away to Genoa on August 22, a fixture that already carried the usual early-season tension for a new coach. Eight days later, the Partenopei step out at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for their first home match of the season against Como.

Allegri must now reshuffle his defensive options before those dates arrive. The system, the hierarchy, perhaps even the transfer priorities could all be affected. One thing is already clear: Marianucci’s setback has turned what should have been a straightforward pre-season bedding-in period into an early test of Napoli’s depth and Allegri’s adaptability.
