Napoli Finalizes Romelu Lukaku Transfer to Fenerbahce

Napoli are closing the book on the Romelu Lukaku chapter, and they’re doing it at speed.

Talks with Fenerbahce have accelerated to the point where both clubs expect a full agreement within hours. Napoli initially pushed back a €6 million offer, but once the Turkish side added performance-related bonuses, the deal finally moved. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the structure was enough to satisfy the Italian club’s demands.

Lukaku has already given his consent. More than that, he has completed his medicals and is simply waiting for the paperwork to catch up. The two clubs are now trading documents, tying up the formalities of a move that will see the Belgian earn around €10 million per season. According to Mediaset, he will sign a one-year contract with an option attached.

For Napoli, this is as much about numbers on a balance sheet as it is about tactics. They will pass on 40 percent of the fee received from Fenerbahce to Chelsea, honoring the terms of their previous agreement. That slice hurts, but it also means they avoid a net loss on the operation. The real victory comes in the wage column: freeing up Lukaku’s hefty salary creates crucial room under the cap and gives the club breathing space for the rest of the market.

This departure has been looming for months. In the spring, his exit felt inevitable after he chose not to return from international duty, opting instead to rehab in his home country in the build-up to the World Cup. At that stage, Napoli were already planning for life without him.

Then came the twist. A change on the Azzurri bench prompted Lukaku to reconsider. He performed a U-turn and opened the door to staying, sensing a possible fresh start under new leadership. Massimiliano Allegri, for his part, was prepared to keep him in the squad. But there was always a catch: at that salary level, he would have been an extremely expensive understudy.

The dilemma was painful because of what came before. Two seasons ago, Lukaku played a central role in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph, racking up 14 goals and 10 assists and bullying defences across the league. He was a reference point, a symbol of their attacking power.

Then the injuries hit. A major thigh problem wiped out most of his latest campaign, leaving a hole in the side and raising doubts about his long-term reliability. At the same time, Napoli’s commitment to Rasmus Hojlund grew stronger, shifting the project towards a younger focal point. The relationship between club and striker frayed as minutes disappeared and the hierarchy up front changed.

So this is where they’ve landed. A deal that took longer than expected, with a few unnecessary swings along the way, but one that ultimately suits all parties. Napoli avoid another season of financial strain and simmering tension. Lukaku, even if he doesn’t get the move to a top-five league he might have preferred, joins a club with ambition and a platform big enough to keep his name in the conversation.
