Mykhaylo Mudryk Cleared to Return to Football

Mykhaylo Mudryk is free to play football again. A four-year ban that threatened to derail his career has been wiped away in a single, decisive agreement.

The Chelsea winger, who produced an adverse analytical finding in an anti-doping test in October 2024, had been staring at a long spell in the wilderness after the FA handed him a four-year suspension in April. He took his fight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Now that appeal has ended not with a courtroom verdict, but with a settlement that changes everything.

On Thursday, the FA confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Mudryk and the World Anti-Doping Agency to resolve the case. The Ukrainian accepted that he had committed the Anti-Doping Rule Violations brought against him and agreed to a period of ineligibility equal only to the time he has already served.

In simple terms: the ban stops here. He can return immediately.

There is a crucial twist at the heart of the decision. The FA acknowledged that Mudryk’s sample, which contained meldonium, would not have triggered an adverse finding under WADA’s current technical document. The rules have shifted since his test.

“If Mr Mudryk’s sample was collected today, the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no ADRVs would have resulted,” the FA said. The chemistry has not changed. The framework judging it has.

For Mudryk, 25, the months on the sidelines cut deep. He described the suspension as the most difficult period of his career and spoke with clear relief at the outcome.

“I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future,” he said in a statement. He reiterated his stance that he has “never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance” and underlined his commitment to competing fairly for club and country.

Chelsea have stood by him throughout the ordeal and moved quickly to draw a line under it. The club stressed how much the chance to return means to the winger and made it plain that the focus now is on football, not hearings and legal papers.

“Everyone at the club now looks forward to helping Misha return to full fitness, back into the squad and back onto the pitch,” Chelsea said.

That pitch could come into sharp focus very soon. Chelsea open their Premier League campaign away at west London rivals Fulham on August 24.

Mudryk’s name is no longer on a charge sheet. It is back on a teamsheet waiting to happen.
