Mykhailo Mudryk’s Doping Ban Lifted: Chelsea Winger Returns to Football

Mykhailo Mudryk’s four-year doping ban has been scrapped, clearing the Chelsea winger to return to football immediately and dragging to an end one of the most bruising sagas of his young career.

The 23-year-old has not played since November 2024, when he tested positive for meldonium, a substance used to increase respiratory capacity and banned under anti-doping regulations. Six months later, the FA imposed the maximum sanction: a four-year suspension that was set to rule him out until December 2028 and cast a shadow over the nine-year contract he signed with Chelsea in 2022.

For a time, it looked like his career might be defined by that decision.

Mudryk appealed, insisting he had “never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules.” Those proceedings took place behind closed doors, as is standard in such cases, but the outcome broke into the open on Friday. The FA confirmed that Mudryk had accepted he had broken anti-doping rules – and, crucially, that he was now free to play again.

The punishment that once threatened to take away his prime years has been lifted.

Mudryk did not hide what the ordeal had cost him, or what the verdict means.

“After a long battle, the four-year ban that was imposed on me has been rescinded, and I am free to resume my career with immediate effect,” he said. “I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future.

“This has been the most difficult period of my career. As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance. My commitment to competing fairly and representing my club and country with professionalism and integrity has always been important to me. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and belief throughout this period."

Those words come after months in exile. Banned from Chelsea’s training ground and denied access to club facilities, Mudryk has been working alone, trying to keep himself ready for a return that, until now, had no clear date. No dressing room. No matchdays. Just a long, uncertain road back.

Chelsea never distanced themselves publicly from the player they invested in so heavily. The club stood by him in statements and on Friday moved quickly to welcome the decision, issuing a short but pointed response that underlined their stance.

They said they were “pleased that the matter has now reached a conclusion which allows him to return to football with immediate effect.”

The timing matters. Preseason is about to start, squads are being shaped, and Mudryk’s future had been a question mark. That cloud has lifted. The winger will now rejoin the group and travel with Chelsea on their preseason tour of Australia and Asia, a stage that suddenly looks less like a warm-up and more like a relaunch.
