Mourinho's Ambitious Transfer Plans for Real Madrid

José Mourinho is not in the mood for a victory lap. Not in June, not at Real Madrid, and certainly not with the transfer market still breathing.

Four signings are already locked in for the European champions’ latest rebuild. Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva have all agreed to join Madrid, their arrivals delayed only by World Cup duty this summer. For most clubs, that would be a statement window. For Mourinho, it is just the opening act.

He wants more. And he has been very clear about what “more” looks like.

Mourinho pushes for two more pillars

According to Marca, the Portuguese coach has formally asked the club for two additional signings: another centre-back to partner or compete with Konaté, and a midfielder in the Luka Modric mould, capable of dictating games at the highest level.

This is not a vague wishlist. Mourinho has already put names on the table.

At the back, he has identified Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck as his preferred options. Both are left-footed, both comfortable stepping out with the ball, both aggressive in the duel – the kind of defender who can handle the physical and tactical demands of the Bernabéu.

The debate inside the club, though, is complicated by timing and fitness. Schlotterbeck has been a regular subject of speculation in recent weeks, his name circling around Madrid’s recruitment meetings and media reports alike. Then came the setback: an injury that rules him out for six to eight weeks. That layoff does not end the conversation, but it changes its tone. For a coach who craves reliability, a summer move for the German may now be at risk.

Bastoni, by contrast, offers continuity and pedigree at the top level, but he will not come cheap. If Madrid move, it will be a deliberate, strategic strike, not an opportunistic punt.

A Modric heir for the next cycle

If the centre-back search is about structure, the midfield chase is about identity.

Mourinho wants a Modric-esque presence – someone who can take the ball under pressure, control rhythm, and still punch holes between the lines. Within that profile, he has zeroed in on two options: Enzo Fernández and Mateus Fernandes.

Inside the club, Fernández is viewed as the leading candidate. His range of passing, intensity without the ball and big-game experience tick almost every box. But prising him away from Chelsea is another matter. A deal is not close, and there is no sense of anything imminent. Madrid admire him; Chelsea value him. That usually means a long, hard negotiation, if it happens at all.

Mateus Fernandes, meanwhile, is seen as another stylistic fit, a player who could grow into that central role over time. The Brazilian offers a different cost profile and trajectory, but the idea is the same: refresh the heart of Madrid’s midfield before the engine starts to creak.

Mourinho’s imprint on the new Madrid

What is already clear is how strongly Mourinho has shaped this window.

His influence ran through the signings of Konaté, Dumfries, Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, and he intends to exert the same pull on the next two arrivals. These are not scattergun additions. They form a spine: power and pace at the back, thrust on the flanks, craft and control in the final third – and, if he gets his way, a commanding presence in midfield to stitch it all together.

The market will decide how many of those pieces Madrid can actually land before the window closes. Injuries, asking prices and World Cup aftershocks will all play their part.

What will not change is Mourinho’s stance. Four deals done, at least two more demanded. He has the squad of a champion, but he is building for something bigger – and he is not easing off until the Bernabéu has the depth, balance and steel he believes a new era requires.
