Jose Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep one of their crown jewels out of the Premier League’s reach.
The 26-year-old winger had entered the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu, opening the door to a free transfer next summer and drawing serious interest from Arsenal. The English champions monitored the situation closely as talks dragged on, sensing a rare opportunity to prise away one of the game’s elite wide forwards.
Instead, Vinicius signed a six-year contract earlier this month, tying his peak years to Madrid. Mourinho is adamant that walking away was never really an option.
‘Don’t leave. It’s not worth it’
Back at Real for a second spell, confirmed in June, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach explained on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito how he approached the Brazil international.
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said.
“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”
For Mourinho, the decision was shaped as much by the dressing-room dynamic as by the club’s stature.
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added, pointing to a squad environment he believes helped convince Vinicius to commit long term.
From Champions League rivals to allies
Only a few months ago, Mourinho stood in the opposite technical area. As Benfica manager last season, he faced Real three times in the Champions League, including a fiery knockout phase play-off.
During the first leg of that tie, Real players accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing Vinicius, prompting the referee to halt the match for around eight minutes. Prestianni denied the allegations at the time, and Mourinho publicly backed his own player.
Uefa later investigated and handed Prestianni a three-match ban, with a further three games suspended, for homophobic conduct.
Mourinho has now revisited that night and the fallout, stressing that his stance then did not mean he stood against Vinicius.
“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said.
The message to Vinicius now is different. The relationship has changed.
“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” Mourinho said.
Real keep their star winger. Mourinho gets his man on board. The rest of Europe, Arsenal included, will have to find another way past a Madrid side that has just locked in one of its most devastating weapons for the long haul.
