Mourinho Faces Ego Challenge with Mbappe and Vinicius at Real Madrid

At Real Madrid, the problem is not talent. It is temperament.

That, at least, is how former defender Rafael Alkorta sees the uneasy alliance between Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, a partnership that still feels more like an idea than a reality.

“Since Mbappe arrived, the issue has been one of egos,” Alkorta said, cutting straight to the point. “I’ve never understood the whole ego thing, nor did I experience it in a dressing room, but the reality is that the connection hasn't quite clicked.”

It is a striking verdict. On paper, this is a forward line built to terrify Europe. Mbappe scores 50 goals a season. Vinicius, at his best, can rip games open on his own. Yet the chemistry has lagged behind the numbers and the hype.

Alkorta believes José Mourinho now holds the key.

“Mbappe scores 50 goals a season, and hopefully, Mourinho can get the two of them performing well together,” he said. “If Vinicius stays, Mourinho will demand things from him that previous coaches couldn't get. He’s surely already made his expectations clear.”

Contract Talks and a Coach’s Challenge

The timing of Alkorta’s comments is no coincidence. Representatives of Vinicius have already sat down with Real Madrid to discuss extending the 26-year-old’s deal beyond 2027. Talks, by all accounts, have moved in the right direction, with both sides described as moderately optimistic after edging closer in negotiations.

For the fanbase, that is no small detail.

“Fans will be happy that he’s close to renewing,” Alkorta noted, welcoming the progress. But he did not shy away from the uncomfortable part. “Mourinho is trying to do what neither Xabi Alonso nor [Alvaro] Arbeloa could manage with the Mbappe-Vinicius duo. They’ve had very little chemistry with the ball and none at all off the ball. I think Vinicius's last two years haven't been good.”

That is a harsh assessment of a player who has, at times, carried Real Madrid in big moments. Yet it underlines the standard expected at the club and the scale of Mourinho’s task. This is not simply about tactics. It is about hierarchy, responsibility, and coexistence in a dressing room with two superstars who both expect to be the reference point.

Mourinho’s Pre-Season Laboratory

The next few weeks will give Mourinho his first real laboratory.

Real Madrid continue their preparations with a friendly against Ferencvaros on Saturday. Four days later comes another test against Deportivo La Coruna, before the curtain properly rises on the 2026/27 Liga season away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on August 22.

These are not just warm-up games. They are auditions.

Mourinho will use them to probe the relationship between Mbappe and Vinicius, to see who drifts where, who makes which runs, who yields space and who commands it. He will look for the moments in which they finally start to think the same footballing thoughts.

Because Real Madrid did not bring Mbappe to the Bernabeu to coexist awkwardly with their other star winger. They brought him to form a devastating partnership.

Alkorta has put it bluntly: the talent is not in question. The egos are. Now Mourinho has a month, a handful of friendlies, and the start of a new Liga campaign to show whether he can turn two soloists into a duo worthy of the shirt.
