Jose Mourinho Eyes Marc Cucurella for Real Madrid Upgrade

Jose Mourinho has not walked through the doors at Valdebebas as Real Madrid coach yet, but the squad list is already on his desk – and one name keeps circling in red ink: Marc Cucurella.

The Portuguese is, according to journalist Ruben Canizares, tracking the Chelsea full-back closely as he weighs up where this Madrid side needs hard, immediate upgrades. Left-back, on paper, looks stocked. Mourinho does not see it that way.

Cucurella open to a move

Cucurella’s situation at Chelsea has drifted into that uneasy grey area. He is not out of the picture, but he is no longer untouchable either. The Spaniard is understood to be open to a new challenge, and those around him believe this summer is the moment to move.

His entourage consider a fee in the region of €45-50 million to be the realistic bracket for any deal. Anything substantially above that, they view as a non-starter. At that price, they believe a transfer can be done; beyond it, the conversation changes.

That valuation has put several big clubs on alert. Cucurella’s name has quietly slid back onto the desks of Europe’s elite in recent weeks – and Madrid are one of the clubs watching.

That gap is where Cucurella comes in. Experienced, aggressive, tactically flexible, and battle-tested in the Premier League, his profile fits the kind of immediate competitiveness Mourinho tends to demand from his full-backs.

The price of an upgrade

There is a catch, and it is not a small one. For Madrid to bring in Cucurella, they first have to clear space. With three left-backs already available, adding a fourth only makes sense if someone moves on. That is not just a football decision; it is a financial one.

Even with Cucurella’s camp pushing the idea that a deal should sit around €45-50 million, Madrid must decide whether that level of investment on the left side of defence is the smartest use of resources in a squad that may need strengthening in other areas as well.
