Morgan Rogers: The Next Big Signing for Manchester United?

The Manchester United technical director is described as an admirer of Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and, according to talkSPORT, is driving United’s interest in the 23-year-old forward ahead of a summer that could reshape the club’s attack.

United are not alone at the table. Arsenal and Chelsea are also tracking Rogers, whose rise at Villa Park has turned him from promising youngster into one of the Premier League’s most influential forwards. But the landscape of English football in 2026 gives this chase a sharper edge.

Only United and Arsenal can offer Champions League football next season. Chelsea, on the outside looking in, may find themselves squeezed out of the running before negotiations even begin. At the very top of the game, the pull of the UCL still dictates careers.

A star ready for the next step

Rogers has earned this level of attention. Across all competitions for Villa, he has racked up 125 appearances, 31 goals and 29 assists – numbers that tell only part of the story of his importance to Unai Emery’s side.

He has been central to Villa’s surge into the elite, lighting up the Europa League and helping deliver both a European trophy and a fourth-placed Premier League finish. Europa League organisers even highlighted his impact, with the Villa forward showcased as Player of the Season in the competition.

On paper, he has no need to move. Villa can offer Champions League football next season as a reward for that Europa League triumph and domestic consistency. He has status, rhythm and a manager who trusts him.

Yet the suggestion is clear: Rogers is preparing for a new challenge away from Villa Park after two-and-a-half highly productive years in the Midlands. Ambition at this level rarely stands still.

The price of potential

That kind of talent, at that age, does not come cheap.

Reports indicate Villa would demand around £80 million to even consider parting with him. With three of England’s biggest clubs circling, that figure could easily climb towards – and possibly beyond – the £100 million mark if a bidding war erupts.

Villa hold the leverage. Rogers is not a squad player; he is a cornerstone. Any club wanting to prise him away will have to prove just how much they value him, not only in transfer fee but in the role they offer at the heart of their project.

Why United makes sense

United’s pitch, though, carries unique weight. A move to Old Trafford would reunite Rogers with Michael Carrick, his former manager at Middlesbrough and the man who first gave him the platform to show he could dominate senior football.

That familiarity matters. Carrick knows his strengths, his preferred zones, his instincts in the final third. For a forward, walking into a dressing room where the manager already understands your game can shave months off the adaptation period.

United’s frontline has already been reshaped. Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have each enjoyed outstanding first seasons in M16, injecting pace, movement and end product into an attack that had grown stale. Rogers would not be a luxury signing; he would be a central piece in a new, aggressive front line built to press high and break quickly.

Then there is Bruno Fernandes. The United captain has just set a new Premier League benchmark, registering his 21st assist of the season to surpass the record previously shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He is, statistically and stylistically, the most creative player in the division.

For any attacker, the prospect is obvious: make the runs, and the ball will arrive. Playing in front of a playmaker of that calibre, with a manager who already trusts you and a club desperate to return to the top, is a compelling package.

Arsenal can counter with their own appeal – a settled, upwardly mobile side, Champions League football, and a clear playing identity under Mikel Arteta. Chelsea, unless their European situation changes, will have to sell a different kind of vision.

Rogers will weigh all of it: the fee, the role, the competition for places, the trajectory of each club. Villa will wait for someone to test their resolve.

The question now is not whether Morgan Rogers is ready for the next stage of his career. It is which of England’s giants is prepared to pay the price – and hand him the stage – to prove it.
