Middlesbrough Target Tottenham's Ashley Phillips for £7million

Middlesbrough are closing in on a significant defensive addition, with Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips set to swap north London for the Riverside in a deal worth an initial £7million.

The 21-year-old is due to undergo a medical, with Standard Sport understanding that the fee could rise through performance-related add-ons. Spurs have also secured a sell-on clause, protecting their long-term interest in a player they signed only last summer.

Kim Hellberg’s side have chased Phillips all summer. They look ready to finally get their man – and raid Tottenham for the second time in this window.

Middlesbrough already smashed their transfer record to land striker Will Lankshear from Spurs last month in a package that could reach £20m. Now they are going back to the same well, this time for a centre-back with deep Championship mileage despite his age.

Hellberg wants a squad built to last the distance in another promotion push. Boro fell at the final hurdle in May, losing to Hull in the play-off final. That defeat has clearly sharpened their focus. Phillips has been identified as a defender who can step straight into the grind of a 46-game season and the high-stakes run-in that follows.

Ready-made for the Championship

Phillips arrives with something rare for a 21-year-old: proper Championship scars.

He has already passed the 100-game mark in England’s second tier, collecting experience at Blackburn, Plymouth and Stoke. Those spells have exposed him to different styles, different pressures, and the unforgiving rhythm of the division Middlesbrough are desperate to escape.

Tottenham saw enough in him to pay £2.5m to Blackburn in 2023. Rovers, anticipating his trajectory, wrote in a 15 per cent clause on any profit from a future sale. With this move, that bet is set to pay out.

For Spurs, Phillips becomes the latest academy-linked player to depart permanently this summer, following Lankshear, Alfie Devine and Tynan Thompson out of the door. The pathway from academy to first team at Tottenham remains brutally competitive; the market is doing the rest.
