Michael Owen on Haaland–Mbappé at Real Madrid
Erling Haaland’s name never drifts too far from Real Madrid gossip. It was there when he was terrorising defences for Borussia Dortmund, and it lingers now while he’s smashing records at Manchester City.
But in Madrid’s boardroom, one bet trumped all others: Kylian Mbappé.
That decision, according to former Real forward Michael Owen, has closed the door on any realistic move for Haaland – unless something drastic happens in the current squad.
Speaking to Skinradar, with his comments carried by Defensa Central, Owen was blunt about the financial and tactical headache a Haaland deal would create for Madrid as long as Mbappé is in town.
“As long as Mbappé is there, I don't see them spending that amount to sign Haaland,” he said. “There are already those who wonder whether Vinícius and Mbappé can play together, because Mbappé likes to play a little to the left side, and there are already questions about that.”
The doubts are not theoretical. The last two seasons have already shown how delicate the balance is on that left flank, where Vinícius Júnior has grown into one of the most devastating wide forwards in the game. Mbappé, who also gravitates to that channel, adds another layer of complexity.
So if fitting Vinícius and Mbappé into the same side is already a riddle, what happens when you drop Haaland into the equation?
“If the pairing is Mbappé and Haaland, then how will they play together?” Owen asked. “Will you make Mbappé play on the left side? I think it will be one or the other, honestly. I don't think you can have two of the best out-and-out strikers in the world, Mbappé and Haaland, in the same team. Personally, I don't think they can be part of the same squad.”
The issue, in Owen’s eyes, is not just chalkboards and arrows. It’s also the sheer scale of the investment.
“I mean, it's about the cost, then trying to make that work, and for that to happen, I think Mbappé would be forced to leave,” he continued. “They tried the Galácticos idea many years ago, in my generation. Simply gathering the big players is not necessarily the perfect solution.”
Owen lived that first-hand. He shared a dressing room with the original wave of Galácticos and watched a star-studded squad strain under the weight of egos, expectations and tactical compromise.
His message now is clear: Madrid can dream of Haaland, Mbappé and Vinícius in the same white shirt, but reality bites. To bring the Norwegian in, something – or someone – truly huge would have to give.
Even so, Owen made sure to underline his enduring respect for the club that once signed him as part of that glittering project. The admiration remains. The warning stands.
