Inter Milan Signs Djed Spence for £25.6m from Spurs
Inter Milan have completed the signing of England full-back Djed Spence from Tottenham, tying the defender to a five-year deal at San Siro.
The Serie A champions are understood to be paying around 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England international to join Simone Inzaghi’s side this summer after John Stones arrived on a free following the expiry of his Manchester City contract.
Farewell to Spurs, new chapter in Milan
The move hardly came as a surprise. Spence had effectively confirmed his exit earlier on Saturday, publishing an emotional farewell to Tottenham supporters across his social media channels.
“A special chapter comes to an end,” he wrote, reflecting on his time in north London. “It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.
“Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”
That “night in Bilbao” will live long in Tottenham folklore. Spence played his part in the club’s 2024-25 Europa League triumph, a run that restored silverware to Spurs and underlined his value on the European stage.
From World Cup ever-present to Inter’s latest English recruit
Spence arrives in Italy on the back of a demanding year. He featured in all eight of England’s games at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s side battled their way to a third-place finish, showcasing his stamina and versatility on the biggest stage.
Back at club level, he remained a key figure for Tottenham last season. The full-back made 44 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, a testament to his durability and consistency in a side undergoing change.
Yet the landscape at Spurs shifted quickly. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro committed his future to the club with a new contract in June, while Andy Robertson arrived from Liverpool to strengthen the left side of the defence. With Roberto de Zerbi reshaping his back line, the competition for minutes grew fierce.
The Tottenham manager had publicly stated in July that he wanted to convince Spence to stay. The club, though, have ultimately sanctioned a significant sale, banking more than double the initial £12.5m they paid Middlesbrough for him in 2022.
Second shot at Serie A
Inter will not be entirely new territory. Spence has already sampled Italian football, spending a six-month loan spell at Genoa in 2024. That brief stint now looks like a prelude to a far bigger role.
Across four years at Spurs, he made 85 appearances, lifted a European trophy and played his way into England’s World Cup plans. Now he steps into a dressing room that expects titles, not just progress.
Inter have made a habit of recruiting Premier League talent and moulding it into serial winners. With Stones already through the door and Spence now in black and blue, the question is simple: how far can this new English core drive the champions in the seasons to come?
