Michael Carrick’s Manchester United rebuild has stepped up another gear with a double goalkeeping departure rubber‑stamped as pre-season plans sharpen into focus.

The United manager has wasted little time putting his stamp on the squad. Andrey Santos arrived swiftly from Chelsea last month, a decisive early move that set the tone. Youri Tielemans followed, United activating the £35 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract to land a proven Premier League midfielder at a fixed price.

Those deals came alongside a clear-out that has gathered real pace.

Rasmus Hojlund, fresh from a successful loan spell at Napoli, has made his switch to the Italian club permanent. Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho have all departed at the end of their contracts, three big wages off the books and three very different chapters closed.

Now Carrick has turned to the goalkeeping department.

Altay Bayindir, starved of meaningful minutes since arriving at Old Trafford, has been given an escape route and the chance to relaunch his career. He joins Celta Vigo on loan for the season, with the La Liga side holding an option to make the move permanent for around £3.5 million, according to reports. For United, it is a pragmatic solution: a pathway for a player who never truly threatened the No1 spot, and a potential fee locked in if he flourishes in Spain.

On the other side of the domestic ladder, Radek Vitek is also heading out, but in a far more substantial deal. The highly rated goalkeeper, who impressed on loan at Bristol City last season, is joining Middlesbrough in a transfer worth up to £14 million. Boro will pay an initial £7 million, with performance-related add-ons to follow if his trajectory continues upward.

United, crucially, have not simply cashed out. Standard Sport understands the club have protected their position with a 35 per cent sell-on clause, matching rights on any future bids and a buy-back option. If Vitek develops into the goalkeeper many inside the game believe he can become, Old Trafford will not be locked out of the conversation.

This is not scattergun trading. It is targeted surgery.

Carrick has trimmed numbers, created space on the wage bill and brought in midfield reinforcements with clear profiles. Yet one area still glares on the squad sheet: left-back. With the veteran Luke Shaw the only recognised specialist in that position in the first-team group, the need is obvious and the search continues.

United’s summer, then, is taking shape. The spine is being retooled, the fringes cleared, the future of young assets carefully hedged. The question now is simple: who arrives next to complete Carrick’s evolving blueprint?
