MetLife Stadium Prepares for 2026 World Cup with Advanced Traffic Management
The World Cup hasn’t arrived in New Jersey yet, but the roads around MetLife Stadium are already playing host to a different kind of trial run.
Ouster, Inc., a San Francisco-based specialist in sensing and perception technology, has completed the deployment of its Ouster BlueCity system at more than 40 locations on highways encircling the stadium, a key venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The rollout comes under a 2025 New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) contract aimed squarely at one of the tournament’s biggest off‑pitch challenges: moving hundreds of thousands of people safely and quickly.
Building a digital game plan for the roads
This is not just a few extra cameras bolted to gantries.
NJDOT has effectively created a digital traffic twin of the urban highways and freeways feeding MetLife. The system pulls in data from lidar sensors, cameras, and other IoT technologies, all funneled into the state’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). The result is a connected corridor that gives operators a real-time, high‑definition view of traffic patterns, bottlenecks, and incidents.
At the heart of that setup is Ouster BlueCity, a full traffic management platform that marries 3D lidar with proprietary AI detection. It tracks multimodal movements, triggers actuation, sends alerts, and generates analytics designed to sharpen decision‑making on the fly. For NJDOT, that means the ability to spot congestion as it forms, react faster to safety events, and adjust flows before gridlock takes hold on a matchday.
Laura Demeo Chace, CEO of ITS America, did not underplay the scale of the undertaking, calling it “the largest ITS project NJDOT has ever done,” and noting it was delivered “in record time.” Her organization visited New Jersey to see how the state is wiring up its network to handle what is expected to be around one million World Cup fans.
The technology stack is dense. Lidar sensors, camera-based video analytics, roadside units, and the statewide ATMS have been knitted together into a single operational picture. For supporters pouring in by car, bus, or shuttle, the aim is simple: a safer, smoother journey to and from one of football’s biggest stages.
A World Cup test bed with a long tail
The World Cup is the spark, but the project is built to outlast the tournament.
By integrating Ouster BlueCity into its existing highway infrastructure, NJDOT is not only gearing up for the intense, short‑burst demands of a global event. It is locking in a permanent intelligent transportation system designed to manage daily traffic in real time, cut congestion, and reduce crash risk long after the final whistle of 2026.
“NJDOT is setting a new standard for how states can leverage technology to handle the world's largest sporting events,” said Dr. Asad Lesani, VP, Global ITS at Ouster. He framed the deployment as both a World Cup solution and a long‑term upgrade for New Jersey residents, with an emphasis on resilience and safety.
For Ouster, whose portfolio spans digital lidar, cameras, AI compute, sensor fusion, perception software, and AI models across industrial, robotics, automotive, and smart infrastructure sectors, New Jersey’s highways have become a showcase.
