Maxence Lacroix Calls Chelsea the Best Club in the World

Maxence Lacroix did not bother with diplomacy on his first day as a Chelsea player. “I think it’s the best move for me because it’s the best club in the world,” he said, the ink barely dry on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old centre-back arrives from Crystal Palace in a deal worth around £52 million, becoming the third signing of the Xabi Alonso era after Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers. Pre-agreed arrivals Emmanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda and Dastan Satpayev have already joined the squad, but Lacroix feels like something different: a statement at the heart of the defence.

Rogers had called Chelsea the “biggest club in London” when he walked through the door. Lacroix went a step further.

Best in London? For him, it’s best in the world.

Sold on Chelsea – and on Alonso

Lacroix’s conviction was not formed in isolation. The France international leaned heavily on familiar voices before committing to the move.

“I spoke with Malo [Gusto]. I spoke with Trev [Chalobah]. I spoke with Benoît [Badiashile],” he explained to club media. “It’s easy for people to speak well about this club because it has a lot of big history and I’m really proud to be a part of it now.”

The conversations that truly sealed it, though, came from the dugout.

“I spoke with the manager on the phone. We spoke about tactics, we spoke about how he sees the game,” Lacroix said. “First of all, I was happy just to speak about football with him, and I saw that we have the same direction and desire for this club.”

The call with Alonso was backed up by familiar faces from the national-team set-up. “When I spoke with the gaffer, when I spoke also with the people I know from the national team who play for Chelsea, like Malo, they told me it was the best club I can go to,” he added. “So already I was saying: ‘O.K., I don’t need to think too much.’ After talking to people I said to myself: ‘This is the best step forward for me.’”

Once the message was clear, the decision followed quickly.

Filling Chelsea’s Most Sensitive Void

Centre-back has been a fault line at Chelsea for more than a year. When Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury last summer, then-manager Enzo Maresca publicly pushed for a replacement. The board refused. The tension that followed helped pave the way for his exit in January.

Colwill is back, but the club did not intend to walk into another season with the same fragility. They targeted Lacroix early and moved decisively.

The Frenchman arrives with four strong Bundesliga seasons at Wolfsburg behind him and two years at Crystal Palace in which he grew into a leader of their back line. He knows the Premier League. He knows the physical tempo. He does not need a settling-in period.

That profile has become a priority at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are also closing in on 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck and 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson, a sharp pivot from the youth-heavy, high-upside transfer strategy that has divided opinion in recent windows. Experience, reliability, and dressing-room know-how are suddenly back in fashion.

Lacroix is not being signed as cover. He is expected to be central to Alonso’s plans from the start, especially with a clear-out looming in his position.

A Defence on the Move

Chelsea are open to offers for Trevoh Chalobah, who played more Premier League minutes than any other Blues centre-back last season. Badiashile and Axel Disasi are also thought to be available for transfer as the club reshapes the core of its defence.

Behind them, the churn could run even deeper. Mamadou Sarr and Aarón Anselmino may leave on loan. Even the futures of Wesley Fofana and Josh Acheampong are being questioned, a reminder of how quickly the landscape can shift at a club that refuses to stand still.

Into that uncertainty walks Lacroix, talking about history, ambition and “the best club in the world.”

Chelsea wanted a defender ready for the league, ready for the pressure, ready to anchor a new era under Alonso. Now they have one who already speaks as if he belongs at the centre of it.
