Mason Greenwood's Potential Move to Fenerbahce: What Manchester United Could Gain

Manchester United will be tracking Mason Greenwood’s next step with unusual interest – and not just out of curiosity about an academy graduate’s career path.

The forward, who left Old Trafford for Marseille in 2024, is at the centre of a developing transfer story that could hand United a sizeable financial boost. Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi claims the Turkish club have already struck an agreement with Greenwood over a four-year deal, a move that would trigger a lucrative sell-on clause for United if a fee is agreed.

From Old Trafford exile to Marseille resurgence

Greenwood has rebuilt his reputation in France. Given a fresh start at Marseille, he responded with the kind of numbers that quickly draw attention across Europe: 16 goals and seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

That output, delivered in a team that ultimately fell short of Champions League qualification, has inevitably pushed him back onto the market. Marseille’s failure to reach Europe’s elite competition has only sharpened the sense that this summer is the moment for a sale.

Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked, each monitoring a player who has shown he can still decide games at a high level. But the most concrete noise right now is coming from Istanbul.

Fenerbahce make their move

Safi, campaigning for the Fenerbahce presidency, has gone public with his claim that Greenwood has committed to the club.

“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” he said, hailing the 24-year-old as a player who has already proved himself in European football. Safi framed the deal as the fulfilment of an election promise: “I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”

The message is clear: Fenerbahce believe they have their man on side. Personal terms, at least from their perspective, are in place. The hard part now lies elsewhere.

Marseille hold the cards – and United wait

For all the noise from Turkey, Fenerbahce still need to convince Marseille. Reports in France suggest the Ligue 1 club want around £47.5 million for Greenwood, a price that reflects both his age and his impact over the past season.

That figure matters a great deal at Old Trafford. When United sanctioned his £26m move to Marseille, they inserted a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause. If Marseille get their asking price and United’s cut is calculated on the full fee, the Premier League club would bank in the region of £19m.

For a player no longer on their books, that would represent a significant piece of business, effectively turning Greenwood’s revival in France into unexpected transfer ammunition for United’s own rebuild.

Marseille weigh up their options

Inside Marseille, Greenwood’s situation is being handled carefully. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi outlined the club’s stance to L’Equipe, making it clear the forward sits at the heart of their summer planning.

“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it,” Lorenzi said.

“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”

That is the balance Marseille must strike: maximising a valuable asset while respecting Greenwood’s wishes and the growing pressure from suitors who sense an opening.

A deal with ripples across Europe

So the picture is set. Greenwood, 24, back among the goals and assists, appears ready for another move. Fenerbahce believe they have him convinced. Marseille want a premium fee. United, from a distance, stand to profit handsomely if the numbers land where they expect.

For Greenwood, it could mean a switch from the south of France to the cauldron of Istanbul. For Marseille, it could fund a reshaped squad. For United, it could be an unexpected injection into their own summer plans.

All that remains is the agreement that really counts: club to club.
