Martin O’Neill Hospital Update: Celtic Manager Expected to Return Soon

Martin O’Neill remains in hospital after what Celtic described as a “small procedure”, with the club expecting their 74-year-old manager to be discharged “in the next day or two”.

Details of the operation have not been made public, and Celtic have moved quickly to calm speculation and draw a line around their manager’s private situation.

“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital,” the club said in a statement on social media, adding that they anticipate his release within days and passing on thanks for supporters’ messages. The club also asked that the privacy of O’Neill and his family be respected.

O’Neill was on the touchline as recently as Monday, guiding Celtic to a 1-0 win over Dundee in their opening Scottish Premiership fixture. It was the first step in defence of the league title he helped reclaim last season, when his second interim spell ended with a Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

That late-season surge persuaded Celtic to turn again to the man who has so often been their stabilising force. In June, O’Neill signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year, formalising his return to the post he first illuminated more than two decades ago.

His comeback story has been one of the more remarkable subplots in recent Celtic history. Having not managed since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019, the Northern Irishman reappeared in Glasgow last October, 20 years after his first trophy-laden spell, after Brendan Rodgers’ acrimonious resignation left the club searching for a trusted figure.

O’Neill initially stepped in as a short-term solution, then ceded control to Wilfried Nancy in December. That experiment ended abruptly after just eight games, opening the door for O’Neill’s second return to the dugout and another charge towards silverware.

By the end of the campaign he had added his eighth and ninth major honours with Celtic, then sat down with major shareholder Dermot Desmond and agreed to stay on. The club now waits for his return from hospital, knowing the man who has already come back to rescue one season will be desperate to rejoin the fight for another.
