Mark van Bommel Appointed Belgium Head Coach for Euro 2028

Belgium have turned to a familiar face from across the border to lead their next era, appointing former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as head coach on a deal running through Euro 2028.

The 49-year-old steps into the role vacated by Rudi Garcia, whose spell ended after Belgium’s quarter-final exit to eventual world champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup. The disappointment in that defeat has clearly sharpened minds in Brussels. This is a reset with a clear time frame and a clear target: four years to build a side capable of going deep at Euro 2028.

Van Bommel will officially start on 15 August, but his shadow will fall over the national set-up long before then. His first competitive tests are not gentle warm-ups. Nations League fixtures against Italy, France and Turkey in September and October will give him an immediate reading of where Belgium stand — and how far they have to climb.

A serial winner arrives

Van Bommel will not arrive alone. He will be assisted by Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond, a backroom team rich in technical detail and European experience.

Martens and Robbemond add tactical nuance and familiarity with both Belgian and Dutch football cultures, a blend that could prove valuable as Belgium try to refresh their style without losing their attacking identity.
