Marcus Rashford has been handed an unexpected opening at Manchester United – and it has not come on the pitch.

The England forward, effectively frozen out at Old Trafford and widely expected to be sold this summer, has been invited by United’s hierarchy to take part in the club’s upcoming Amazon documentary, a move that hints at a dramatic softening of stance over his future.

From outcast to potential leading man?

Rashford has not played a competitive minute for United since December 2024. Under the new regime, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager to trim a swollen wage bill, the plan looked simple: cash in and move on.

He was shipped out on loan to Aston Villa and then Barcelona last season after a breakdown in his relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim, triggered when Rashford made clear he wanted to leave his boyhood club. For a player once seen as the face of United’s modern era, the fall was stark.

Barcelona had the option to make his stay permanent for £24m. They walked away. No deal, no long-term contract, just a polite goodbye and a ticket back to Manchester once his post-World Cup break with England is over.

That decision has left Rashford’s career at a crossroads. At 28, with several clubs monitoring his situation, he sits in limbo. United, though, have just nudged the door open.

Cameras rolling, questions lingering

As Michael Carrick’s squad filter back into pre-season and cameras begin to follow their every move for “All or Nothing – Manchester United”, club executives have sounded out Rashford about featuring in the fly-on-the-wall series, part of a lucrative agreement with Amazon.

He has yet to decide whether to accept the invitation, still weighing up his next step. But the offer itself is revealing. You do not usually build a season-long documentary around a player you are desperate to push out of the door.

At the very least, it suggests United are prepared to start the new campaign with Rashford in their plans, or are keen to show the world – and potential suitors – that bridges have not been completely burned.

The contrast with last season is striking. Amazon wanted to plant their cameras at Carrington and Old Trafford then as well, only for Amorim to block the project. With Amorim gone and Carrick in charge, the club has embraced the spotlight, insisting the series fits with a desire to be “as open and transparent as possible” with its global fanbase.

That transparency now extends to Rashford, a player whose story – academy prodigy, local hero, public fallout, uncertain future – is tailor-made for this kind of access.

For United, the documentary promises unprecedented access to the dressing room at Old Trafford and the training pitches at Carrington. For Rashford, it offers something different: a platform, perhaps even a route back into the fold.
