The Manchester United forward, fresh from a productive loan spell at Barcelona, is expected to miss out on a starting place when Thomas Tuchel’s side open their Group L campaign against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday night. Reports suggest Anthony Gordon, newly signed by Barcelona, will get the nod on the left of England’s attack.

That is Rashford’s territory. It has been for years.

Tuchel has spent the past fortnight shaping his team during England’s camp in Miami before the squad flew to their base in Kansas City. Rashford featured in both warm-up friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica, but the pattern was telling: he started one, then dropped to the bench for the second as Gordon came into the XI.

The pressure for that left-wing berth has been building ever since. Gordon’s club move only sharpened the edges.

Now, as England fine-tune for Croatia, the indications are clear. Gordon is in front. Rashford, at 28 and in form, looks set to begin the World Cup on the bench, waiting for a chance to change the game rather than define it from the first whistle.

Tuchel could, in theory, redeploy him elsewhere across the front line, but both players naturally drift into the same channels. With that overlap, Rashford’s most realistic route into the opener appears to be as an impact substitute.

He will not be alone in that role, but it is a comedown for a player who travelled with every intention of being central to England’s plans.

A strong season, a clouded future

The personal backdrop only adds to the intrigue.

Rashford’s loan at Barcelona was, on paper, a success: 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions. Those numbers helped secure his England place and reminded Europe that, given rhythm and responsibility, he can still hurt teams at the highest level.

Yet the very club that helped revive his stock may now be closing the door.

Barcelona’s £69million move for Gordon has thrown Rashford’s long-term situation into doubt. The Spanish side hold a £26million clause to make his stay permanent, but the signing of another left-sided forward has sparked talk that they will walk away from that option.

If that happens, Rashford returns to Old Trafford and to another battle: re-establishing himself at Manchester United.

Carrick on the line, decisions ahead

Amid the uncertainty, one line of communication has stayed open. Rashford is understood to have explored the idea of rejoining United’s first-team squad next season and has been in regular contact with manager Michael Carrick.

For United, a re-energised Rashford coming back from a World Cup could be a timely boost. For the player, it could be a reset. Or a holding pattern before another move.

His immediate concern, though, is not Carrick or Barcelona. It is Croatia, then Ghana, then Panama.

England’s group schedule offers little room for error. A slow start can drag a tournament off course. That is where Rashford’s value from the bench may yet grow. Tuchel will want weapons to throw on when legs tire and space opens up; few forwards relish broken-field football more than Rashford, driving at retreating defenders.

He may not hear his name read out with the starters in Dallas. He may have to watch Gordon stride into the role he once considered his own. But tournaments are rarely decided by the first team sheet.

For Rashford, this World Cup could become something else entirely: not just a stage to showcase his talent, but an audition for his next chapter, whether that plays out under the lights of Old Trafford or somewhere far beyond.
