Manchester United are preparing to hand Marcus Rashford a fresh start at Old Trafford, resisting Premier League interest as the forward heads back from a productive year in Spain.

Rashford, who left under a cloud last summer after falling out with then-manager Ruben Amorim, rebuilt his form and confidence on loan at Barcelona. The deal included a €30m (£26m) buy option that looked, at one stage, like a bargain the Catalan club would gladly trigger.

They have walked away.

Barcelona’s decision not to activate the clause leaves Rashford returning to Manchester United after his summer break, his future suddenly back in the hands of a club that had been ready to move on. Interest has not been in short supply: Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been monitoring the situation, while clubs in Turkey have explored the possibility of a deal.

Yet the picture is shifting.

According to The i Paper, Rashford is now “most likely” to be given the chance to resurrect his United career next season after the most attractive exit routes failed to materialise. Suitors are expected to circle again with loan proposals, testing whether United believe they can fight on multiple fronts without their academy product.

Inside Old Trafford, there is resistance.

Senior figures are understood to be deeply wary of selling Rashford to another Premier League side. The fear is obvious: a homegrown forward rediscovering his scoring touch in a rival’s shirt, with every goal a pointed reminder of what United let slip. The prospect of that kind of humiliation has cooled enthusiasm for a domestic sale, even when serious money has been on the table.

Tottenham’s move captures the tension perfectly. The north London club were ready to go hard for Rashford this summer and, crucially, were prepared to pay a transfer fee rather than push for a loan. For United, shifting his wages and banking a fee held clear appeal. But the potential public-relations backlash if Rashford exploded at Spurs made the idea far less palatable.

So, for now, he stays in limbo – and that limbo is shaping United’s entire attacking market.

Carrick and Rashford: a new alliance

Behind the scenes, the dynamic has changed again with Michael Carrick in the dugout. Fabrizio Romano reports that Rashford is “really looking forward” to the chance to work under the new manager, and that the feeling is mutual. Carrick is described as “genuinely excited” by the opportunity to help revive the forward’s career at the club where both men came through in different eras.

Rashford will report for pre-season at United, with an understanding on both sides: they will give this another go. The early weeks under Carrick will be an audition of sorts. If the partnership clicks, Rashford stays and becomes part of a reshaped frontline. If it doesn’t, the club and player will revisit the possibility of a move before the transfer window shuts.

That uncertainty is freezing other deals.

Romano explains that United’s pursuit of Crysencio Summerville has gone “completely cold”. While Roma push hard for the winger and have already lodged three bids with Aston Villa, United are standing still. The logic is blunt: until Rashford’s future is settled, they intend to keep their current attacking structure intact. Only if he leaves will the door open for a new wide forward.

Summerville is not the only name on the list. Iliman Ndiaye, a key figure at Everton, is also appreciated by United. Clubs from abroad have enquired about the Senegal international, while Aston Villa have held talks, but United are again on pause. Ndiaye would be expensive and Everton consider him crucial, so any move would require conviction – something United will not have while Rashford’s situation hangs over their plans.

For now, everything loops back to the same question.
