Marc Cucurella walked into Valdebebas with the look of a man who knows exactly what this means. Not just another transfer. Not just another shirt presentation. For a boy raised at Barcelona’s famed La Masia, choosing Real Madrid is a career crossroads and a statement rolled into one.

He has already passed the medical, already felt the weight of the white shirt in his hands, already stepped onto the training pitch under José Mourinho’s gaze. The reality has sunk in quickly.

“It is a source of pride. I think few people can say they have worn this shirt,” Cucurella told Marca after his first session as a Madrid player. “We have watched great legends. It is a club with a great history, and the biggest club in Europe.”

For someone shaped in Barcelona’s academy, the symbolism is unavoidable. He grew up on the other side of the rivalry, but his words left no room for ambiguity. This, for him, is the pinnacle.

“Being here today is a privilege and an honour, and above all a reward for all the effort I have put in throughout my career,” he said. “I have waited a long time, and it felt like it took a long time, but I am here now.”

From watching the Bernabéu to owning the stage

For years, Cucurella watched Real Madrid’s greatest nights like the rest of the football world: from a distance, on a screen, as a rival, as a neutral, as a fan of the spectacle.

“As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabéu, and all the Champions League titles the team has lifted,” he recalled.

Those images stay with a player. The floodlights. The noise. The sense that in that stadium, on those European nights, the sport bends to Madrid’s will. Now he steps into that story, not as an observer but as a protagonist.

“As a player, and as a child starting to play football, it is very difficult to turn down the chance to play for a club like this,” he continued. “The opportunity came to me and I did not hesitate for a moment. Getting the chance to live it from the inside and take part in it is a very big responsibility, but it is also a beautiful and important challenge.”

Responsibility and beauty. That is the dual reality of pulling on this shirt. Every mistake is magnified, every run judged, every performance weighed against a century of success. Yet it is exactly that pressure that draws players in.

Early days under Mourinho

Cucurella’s first taste of life under José Mourinho has been encouraging. The Portuguese coach, never shy of demanding intensity and character, has set a tone that the new full-back clearly appreciates.

“A lot of confidence and spontaneity,” is how Cucurella described the environment. “We have to do on the pitch what we are good at, and above all enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year.”

That word – spontaneity – matters. It hints at freedom within structure, at a coach willing to let his players express themselves once the hard work is done. For an attack-minded full-back, it is an appealing brief: defend with discipline, then let your game flow.

The integration has started off the pitch as well. Messages from future teammates arrived quickly, and the first handshakes and conversations at the training ground have broken the ice.

“I was already excited to get to know my teammates,” Cucurella admitted. “I spoke with some of them after they sent me messages. It has been a very good start.”

The real test, of course, will not come in the training rondos or the first friendly. It will come on those same Bernabéu nights he used to watch from afar, when the anthem rings out, the pressure tightens, and Real Madrid demand that their latest signing proves he belongs among those legends he grew up admiring.
