Manchester United’s long-running interest in Aurelien Tchouameni has hit a serious snag – and the problem is unfolding 700 miles away in Barcelona.

United have tracked Tchouameni for months, running background checks on the Real Madrid midfielder as far back as April and making it clear they would move if the door ever opened. For a while, there was a quiet optimism at Old Trafford: Madrid admired the Frenchman, but if they chose to reshape their midfield, United wanted to be first in line.

Now, that scenario is slipping away.

Barcelona have lodged an opening bid for Manchester City’s Rodri, a move that could lock Tchouameni into Madrid for the long term. Real had already started sounding out the World Cup winner before Barca stepped into the race, but the Catalan club’s push for Rodri has the potential to settle Madrid’s plans once and for all.

Rodri has a new deal on the table at City, yet he has never hidden the appeal of a return to Spain. He is understood to favour Barcelona over a move to Jose Mourinho’s side, and City, while reluctant, will not block his exit if they receive a fee they consider fair.

Barcelona’s first offer, though, was miles off. Their bid, reported as €45m (£38m) plus add-ons, fell well short of City’s valuation, with the Premier League champions holding out for a figure in excess of £60m. The gap is large, but the intent is clear. Barca want Rodri, and they are prepared to test City’s resolve.

If they get him, Madrid’s need to even contemplate cashing in on Tchouameni all but vanishes.

Madrid close ranks around Tchouameni

United’s interest hinges on one thing: Madrid’s willingness to sell. So far, there has been none.

The 26-year-old has agreed terms on a new five-year contract at the Bernabeu. No official announcement yet, which has only fuelled whispers around Europe, but inside Madrid the stance has remained firm. They see Tchouameni as part of their next midfield era, not a saleable asset.

The Rodri saga only strengthens that position. Should Barcelona prise City’s metronome away from the Etihad, Madrid will feel no pressure to enter that market. No scramble, no knock-on deals, no forced decisions. And with that, United’s faint hope of Madrid loosening their grip on Tchouameni starts to fade.

For Old Trafford, the latest developments make a deal for the France international look increasingly remote.

Another Barcelona blow for United

All this comes as Barcelona threaten to hand United a second setback in the same window.

Their move for Rodri arrives on the back of a decision that has already hurt United’s summer plans: Barca chose not to trigger the option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently after his successful loan spell last season.

The clause sat at £26m – a straightforward route for United to bank a significant fee and ease financial pressure. Barcelona walked away. United were left without the funds they had hoped to recycle into other areas of the squad.

Now the same club could indirectly close off one of the most ambitious midfield targets on United’s list. Different player, same frustration.

Midfield debate at Old Trafford

Inside United, the question now is whether to keep chasing another midfielder at all.

They have already committed £85m on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in the last month, heavy investment for a department that was supposed to be taking shape rather than being ripped up. With Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo also in the mix, Michael Carrick already has four senior options fighting for two starting spots.

The recruitment team are still debating whether to push on for a third signing in that area or accept that, for this window at least, the midfield is done.

Tchouameni would have been the transformative piece – the kind of signing that forces a rethink of the entire structure. Instead, as Barcelona push for Rodri and Madrid tighten their hold, United may have to watch another elite midfielder move elsewhere while they argue over whether to buy one more.
