Manchester United Targets Igor Thiago as Striker Plans Emerge

Manchester United’s summer rebuild has a clear spine: fix the midfield, sort the left flank, and only then address the attack. Yet even with other positions taking precedence, the club has quietly moved a piece on the striker board.

According to respected reporter Ben Jacobs, United have discussed Brentford forward Igor Thiago internally and gone as far as making a call to the player’s camp to gauge his situation.

Midfield and left-back first – but the No. 9 debate rumbles on

United’s hierarchy remain locked on their primary objective: completing a three-man midfield refresh. Two new faces are already through the door, and the push is on for a third signing to reshape the engine room.

At the same time, the club are working on a solution at left-back. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has emerged as the leading target, with United keen to bring in a long-term option on that side.

Out wide, a new left winger will only come into play if an exit is found for Marcus Rashford. The same conditional thinking applies up front. A move for a new centre-forward is expected to depend heavily on the future of Joshua Zirkzee. If he stays, United may park the idea. If he leaves, the search intensifies.

That hasn’t stopped the club from scanning the market.

United briefly explored the possibility of a romantic reunion with academy product Danny Welbeck before he chose to sign for Chelsea. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have also been floated as potential options, names that underline the club’s interest in a proven Premier League scorer.

Igor Thiago on the radar

Into that conversation steps Igor Thiago. The Brentford striker, 25, is firmly on the club’s list, with Jacobs revealing that United view him as “Premier League ready” after a prolific season.

Thiago hit 22 goals in the Premier League last term and 25 in all competitions, a return that propelled him into the Brazil national team. His club form earned him a debut for the Seleção in 2026, and he featured at the World Cup, where the step up to international football proved a far tougher examination.

Even so, United have taken notice. Speaking on The United Stand, Jacobs confirmed that Thiago has been the subject of internal discussions at Old Trafford and that the club have already made what he described as a “normal player call” to better understand the forward’s situation.

The interest is real. The move, at this stage, is not.

A difficult deal in a crowded window

For all the admiration, prising Thiago away from Brentford this summer will be “incredibly difficult,” Jacobs warned. Brentford know the value of a goalscorer who has already delivered consistently in the division, and United’s own priorities complicate matters.

The club’s budget and focus remain tied up in securing that third midfielder and landing a left-back. Only once those pieces are in place will the striker question move to the front of the queue.

Jacobs also underlined a key point that has hovered over United’s striker planning all window: any major move for a new No. 9 is likely to hinge on what happens with Zirkzee. If the Dutchman stays, Thiago and others may remain names on a list rather than concrete targets.

For now, United have made their call, gathered information, and logged their interest. Whether that early contact turns into a full-scale pursuit will depend on how the rest of their summer puzzle falls into place.
