The academies, though, are a different kind of battleground.

United raided Liverpool’s youth ranks in 2021 when they persuaded winger Ethan Ennis to turn down a contract on Merseyside and head to Carrington. According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice on youth football and transfers, Joseph “looks set to leave” Liverpool after being left out of the club’s latest list of scholars. That omission has not gone unnoticed.

United, The Secret Scout reports, “hold strong interest” in the teenager, whose blend of physical presence and neat link-up play has marked him out in a position where top prospects are scarce. Joseph has already stepped up to the U18 Premier League, making two appearances last season and scoring three goals – a small sample, but an eye-catching return for a 16-year-old centre-forward.

The buzz around him is not confined to England. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts multiple times to watch Joseph, underlining the scale of the competition. When German giants start circling for a young No 9, people pay attention.

“There aren’t many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” The Secret Scout added, summing up why this tug-of-war could intensify quickly.

If United succeed, they will have plucked a highly rated England U16 international directly from their oldest enemy’s production line – a symbolic victory as much as a footballing one.

Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar

Joseph is not the only teenager catching United’s eye. The club’s recruitment team has also been tracking Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, with Bayern again among the admirers.

Reports relayed by The Peoples Person claim the 20-year-old, a towering presence at the back, has emerged as a player of interest for United. His profile fits the modern brief: physically imposing, comfortable in defensive duels, and viewed as a long-term asset rather than a quick fix.

Chelsea, though, are in no mood to cash in. The London club are believed to have rejected approaches from several unnamed sides, treating Acheampong as effectively untouchable at this stage of his development.

INEOS plan: marquee names and future pillars

Much of the noise around United since Champions League qualification has centred on marquee signings – big fees, big reputations, instant impact. That remains part of the INEOS vision.

But the pursuit of Joseph and the admiration for Acheampong tell another story. United’s hierarchy are clearly intent on rebuilding the club’s foundations as well as its first team, stacking the academy and under-21 ranks with players who can either graduate to Old Trafford or command serious value in the market.
