Manchester United Target Tchouameni as Mourinho Reshapes Midfield

Aurelien Tchouameni spent much of last season holding together a Real Madrid midfield that creaked around him. Now, just as he looks to drag France deeper into a major tournament, his club future is being dragged into the centre of the summer’s transfer storm.

Jose Mourinho’s overhaul at the Santiago Bernabeu has put almost every midfielder under review. Even the Frenchman who emerged as one of Madrid’s few consistent performers is not immune. And Manchester United are ready to pounce.

United move after Casemiro exit

According to Jose Felix Diaz, speaking on Ruben Martin’s livestream, United have moved Tchouameni close to the top of their list and are prepared to put serious money and a five-year contract on the table.

They need to. Casemiro’s switch to Inter Miami has ripped out a chunk of United’s experience and steel in the centre of the pitch. The club had lined up Mateus Fernandes as the preferred replacement, only to watch the Portuguese midfielder choose Tottenham from West Ham.

That miss has sharpened their focus. The search has swung decisively towards Tchouameni, a player with the profile to anchor United’s midfield for the long term and the pedigree to walk straight into the Premier League spotlight.

Initial contacts are expected in the coming days. Any agreement would sit among the heavyweight deals of this window, both in fee and in symbolic value: a cornerstone of Real Madrid’s future project potentially walking away, and Mourinho reshaping his engine room in one brutal summer.

Tchouameni torn between status and opportunity

From Madrid’s perspective, the situation is delicate. Tchouameni was one of their better midfielders last season and, by all accounts, wants to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabeu.

But the landscape around him is shifting. Real Madrid are actively targeting a new central midfielder, with Enzo Fernandez high on their list. Another big-name arrival in that zone would crowd the picture, even for a player of Tchouameni’s stature.

United, by contrast, can offer prominence and responsibility. In the Premier League, he would become a reference point, not just another elite option in a stacked rotation. For a 24-year-old entering his prime, that kind of platform is hard to ignore.

For now, his focus has to be physical rather than tactical. He picked up a knock before France’s Round of 16 tie against Paraguay and remains a doubt for the quarterfinal against Morocco, with Manu Kone on standby to step in. Any transfer talk will have to run parallel to his race for fitness.

Arbeloa lands at Fulham and looks back to Madrid

While Tchouameni weighs his future at the top end of the market, another Real Madrid storyline is unfolding in west London.

Alvaro Arbeloa, former Madrid full-back and youth coach, has been appointed Fulham manager on a three-year deal. And almost immediately, his gaze has turned back towards his old club.

As reported by Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, Arbeloa has three Madrid players in his sights: Franco Mastantuono, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia. Fulham’s plan is clear: one loan, two permanent signings to form the backbone of the new project.

Mastantuono is the loan target. Fran and Gonzalo are being lined up for permanent moves, a bold play that would give Arbeloa a core of players he knows and trusts as he tries to stamp his identity on the Cottagers.

It makes sense. A coach walking into a new dressing room often leans on familiar faces, especially when time is short and expectations are high.

Three players, three different dilemmas for Madrid

For Real Madrid, though, each case lands in a different drawer.

Fran Garcia looks the closest to the exit. He has been heavily linked with Real Betis, with a €4 million deal already advanced and expected to be wrapped up soon. The arrival of Marc Cucurella and the presence of Alvaro Carreras have effectively shut the door on Fran’s minutes at left-back in Madrid. His path is blocked; a move feels like the natural conclusion.

Gonzalo Garcia and Mastantuono sit in a different category. Both are currently in Mourinho’s plans, at least until pre-season ends. The Portuguese coach wants to see them up close before deciding whether they form part of his first wave or become assets to develop elsewhere.

Loaning Mastantuono to Fulham could be attractive. Regular Premier League minutes at his age would offer a sharp education if Madrid judge that his immediate opportunities at the Bernabeu will be limited.

Selling Gonzalo is another matter entirely. Offloading a talented youngster on a permanent deal carries a different weight, both in sporting terms and in the message it sends about Madrid’s long-term planning.

Any agreement for Fran or Gonzalo will have to satisfy Madrid on two fronts: the fee must be right, and the move cannot leave Mourinho short in key positions.

One thing does work in Madrid’s favour. Having a trusted former player like Arbeloa keen on their fringe or emerging talents gives them a controlled environment to place those who need clarity. It is a useful pressure valve in a squad full of unresolved futures.
