Manchester United Target Khephren Thuram for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering pace – and attention has now turned firmly towards Turin.

With Ederson already through the door from Atalanta in a deal worth more than £40million, United have made an assertive start to reshaping the centre of the pitch after Casemiro’s departure. But no one at Old Trafford is pretending one signing is enough. Not after a season that ended with third place in the Premier League and a sense that this squad is close, but not quite ready, to live among the elite again.

Carrick wants more than consolidation. He wants a team that can stay in the title conversation and carry its weight in the Champions League. The club hierarchy, for once, seem to agree: this summer has to bring proper investment, not patchwork.

And that is where Khephren Thuram comes in.

Thuram on United’s radar

The Juventus midfielder has emerged as a serious option for United, with the Italian club’s finances opening a potential door. After missing out on Champions League qualification, Juve are under pressure to balance the books and are understood to need around £10–11million by the end of the month to remain financially compliant.

Thuram cost the Bianconeri roughly €20million, but his price has risen. Juventus are now demanding between £35–40million – a figure slightly trimmed from earlier whispers but still reflective of his growing stature. According to Corriere dello Sport, relayed via Man Utd news, United are weighing up whether to meet that valuation.

They are not alone. Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia are already prepared to match Juve’s asking price. The money is there, the proposal is real. But the player’s stance keeps this story alive for United.

Thuram is said to favour staying in Europe. More specifically, he is believed to see the Premier League as his ideal next step and has already turned down Galatasaray this summer. For a club that has spent years chasing midfielders who would rather be elsewhere, that detail matters.

What Thuram would bring to Old Trafford

Thuram is not a luxury playmaker or a deep-lying metronome. He is a box-to-box midfielder built for tempo and duels, a player who drives games rather than decorates them.

His energy is relentless. He covers ground, presses aggressively, and embraces the physical side of English-style football that often exposes imports from Serie A. He offers the kind of vertical running and defensive bite that United have lacked whenever Casemiro has been absent or off the pace.

His qualities have not gone unnoticed in Italy. Maurizio Sarri’s long-time assistant Giovanni Martusciello offered a striking endorsement last year, saying: “Who do I like? Thuram, I think he’s extraordinary. Overall, they seem like a team that can have its say until the end. Then, to fight for the big goals, at least the ones they’ve always had in Turin, we need more time.”

At 25, Thuram sits in that sweet spot: experienced enough to cope with the scrutiny that comes with Old Trafford, young enough to grow into a long-term pillar of the side. He fits the profile of a modern Premier League midfielder – powerful, mobile, and comfortable operating in both penalty areas.

There is also a timing quirk in United’s favour. Thuram is currently free to discuss his future, with no international commitments on his schedule after missing out on France’s World Cup squad. Negotiations, if United decide to move, would not be complicated by tournament distractions or extended holidays.

United still need “at least a couple” of midfield additions to properly replace Casemiro and build depth for a season that will stretch across domestic and European fronts. Ederson is the first piece. Thuram, if the club push ahead, could be the second – and the one that tells the rest of the league that Carrick’s rebuild is not about standing still near the top four, but about trying to crash the title race again.
