Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Replacement

Manchester United’s search for the next anchor of their midfield has taken a familiar turn – back to Manchester, but not to their own academy.

Felix Nmecha, once of Manchester City and now thriving at Borussia Dortmund, has emerged as a serious target for United as they plan for life after Casemiro, according to reports in Germany and the USA.

The timing is no coincidence. Nmecha is shining on the biggest stage.

The 25-year-old has forced his way into the World Cup conversation with Germany and wasted little time announcing himself. He opened the scoring in their 7-1 demolition of Curacao, crashing a first-time, right-footed effort into the top corner from around 20 yards. One touch, one swing, no doubt.

The goal turned heads, but it’s the rest of his game that has kept the scouts glued to their seats. Nmecha has impressed with his box-to-box energy, his ability to break up counterattacks, and his willingness to cover ground from one penalty area to the other.

For a United side planning a midfield rebuild, that profile matters.

From City prospect to Dortmund pillar

Nmecha’s story carries an extra twist for United. He grew up across town.

He came through the ranks at Manchester City before leaving in 2021, heading to Wolfsburg after a standout loan spell with Anderlecht. From there, his rise has been steady rather than explosive, but Dortmund saw enough to invest and hand him a central role in their long-term plans.

Those plans are reflected in his contract. Dortmund have him tied down until 2030 and, crucially, hold a release clause that does not activate until the summer of 2027. Any club willing to trigger it then would need to put £61m on the table.

For now, the Bundesliga club are relaxed. They expect his big decision to come in that window, not this summer.

United, City, Real – a crowded race

That hasn’t stopped the suitors circling.

Sky Sports Deutschland report that United are among a growing list of clubs tracking Nmecha. Manchester City, the club that developed him, have also been credited with an interest, adding a sharp edge to the story. The idea of a former City prospect returning to Manchester in United red, with City watching on, writes its own headlines.

The field does not end there. Real Madrid are also believed to be in the race, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer. For a midfielder still building his reputation at Dortmund, that level of attention says plenty about how he is viewed across Europe.

But admiration and action are very different things when a selling club holds all the cards.

Dortmund and the player hold firm

Dortmund’s stance is clear: they are not in a rush to cash in. With Nmecha under a long contract and the release clause years away from kicking in, the German side can afford to be stubborn.

Nmecha’s camp is striking the same tone. Speaking to Bild, his agent Tobi Alabi underlined the player’s commitment to Dortmund’s project for now.

“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said.

“He is grateful for the trust and the platform the club have given him. The player is developing from season to season, and when a player performs well, there is naturally always interest and questions about his future. That’s part of top-level football and reflects the progress he has made.

“Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”

That message will not deter United, but it does set the tone: any move in the immediate future would take serious money and serious persuasion.

United’s midfield rebuild gathers pace

The pursuit of Nmecha comes as United close in on another major piece of their midfield puzzle. The club are on the brink of confirming the signing of Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta in a £39m deal. He is expected to undergo his medical while on World Cup duty.

Ederson would add bite and balance. Nmecha, if United can ever prise him away from Dortmund, would bring dynamism and a long-term bridge to the post-Casemiro era.

For now, he remains in yellow and black, driving Dortmund on and using the World Cup to underline his credentials. The question is not whether Europe’s giants are watching. They already are.

The real question is which of them will be willing – and able – to drag him out of Dortmund’s grip when the time finally comes.
