Manchester United have been handed one of the most intriguing transfer openings of the summer: Aurelien Tchouameni, the heartbeat of Real Madrid’s midfield, could reportedly be prised away for £68 million.

For a player tied down until 2031 and fresh from winning LaLiga and the Champions League, that figure sounds closer to a clearance sale than a calculated valuation.

A new contract – and a lingering doubt

Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano reported that Tchouameni had agreed a new deal with Real Madrid running to 2031. On paper, that should have shut the door on any suitors. In reality, the door appears to be on the latch.

Madrid have not formally announced the contract extension. That silence has allowed speculation to swirl, especially around Old Trafford, where the need for an elite defensive midfielder has become a recurring theme of every transfer window.

Andy Mitten, speaking on Talk of the Devils on July 14, lifted the lid on the uncertainty. He revealed a telling message from a contact in Madrid, sent after Tchouameni had put pen to paper.

“‘They could still sell him’,” Mitten read out. Four words that change the entire complexion of the saga.

Mitten stressed that Tchouameni is “perfectly happy in Madrid” and that any move would hinge on Real’s own calculations, not player unrest. Yet the key line remained: “I wasn’t quite so sure that you can write off any deal until the transfer window has closed.”

In other words, contract or not, nothing is completely off the table.

Madrid’s need to “sell big”

This is where Real Madrid’s wider strategy crashes into United’s midfield problem.

Mitten’s conversations with journalists following the Spanish national team highlighted a simple reality: Madrid want to buy big and, to do that, they may have to sell big.

So who goes?

• Fede Valverde has been told he is on course to be captain.
• Eduardo Camavinga, for all his talent, would not fetch the same level of fee.
• Tchouameni, by contrast, sits in that rare bracket: young, elite, proven at the very top, and hugely valuable.

Mitten was clear that any move remained “improbable” and always has. But he also underlined the pressure of the market: “The chance comes if Real Madrid decide that they want to sell one of their very best players because they need money, and money dictates a lot of things in football.”

That’s the hinge on which this entire story swings.

Mourinho, Rodri and a shock price tag

On Thursday, The Sun pushed the story into a different gear. Their report claimed Real Madrid are willing to sell Tchouameni to Manchester United this summer, with a price tag set at £68 million.

The British outlet added another layer: new Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is said to have planned on keeping Tchouameni but is now “prepared to cash in for the right fee” to fund an ambitious move for Manchester City’s Rodri, valued at around £85m.

If that scenario holds, the logic is brutal. Madrid would sacrifice their only senior specialist defensive midfielder in order to chase the man widely regarded as the best in that position in world football.

On a tactical level, it is a gamble. On a financial level, it is a statement.

And that fee. In this market, £68m for Tchouameni feels jarring.

Mateus Fernandes has gone for £85m. Sandro Tonali commanded £100m. Elliot Anderson fetched £116m. Against that backdrop, a 24-year-old France international, already a Champions League and LaLiga winner, available for less than £70m, looks like an anomaly.

For Manchester United, it would be a rare thing: a genuine bargain at the very top of the market.

United’s angle: improbable, but irresistible

There is an important caveat: Mitten still describes the move as unlikely. Real Madrid would have to decide to break up a midfield core that has been carefully assembled and is built for the next decade.

Yet the dynamics are clear. United admire Tchouameni. They have tracked him. They know exactly what he would bring: control, physical presence, composure on the ball, and the ability to shield a back line that has been repeatedly exposed.

Mitten also suggested that if the situation changed, Tchouameni “would be perfectly happy to play for Manchester United.” Not agitating for a move, not pushing for the exit, but open to the idea if Madrid make the first move.

That nuance matters. This is not a player forcing his way out. This is a club weighing up whether one of their crown jewels can be converted into the funds required to reshape the squad again.

A market that rewards ruthlessness

The real shock is not that Madrid might sell. It is that they would sell at this price.

Tchouameni is currently the only senior out-and-out defensive midfielder in their squad. Letting him go would leave them with a huge hole unless the Rodri plan lands perfectly. Any delay, any failure in that chase, and they are suddenly exposed in the one area where they have usually been watertight.

For United, though, that risk belongs to Madrid. If the door opens, Old Trafford will not hesitate.

A player of Tchouameni’s calibre, at £68m, in a summer where prices have ballooned to previously absurd levels? That is the kind of deal that can alter the shape of a midfield, and with it, the direction of a project.
