Manchester United Eye £43m Move for Tapsoba Amidst Rival Interest

Manchester United face a £43million bill if they decide to move seriously for Edmond Tapsoba – and they are not alone in the chase.

Bayer Leverkusen have made their stance clear. They do not want to lose their captain, a cornerstone of their title-winning side, but are prepared to listen if a “suitable financial offer” lands on the table. For any Premier League club, that starts at around £43m.

United in the queue – but not at the front

Manchester United have tracked Tapsoba before. Interest was first credited in 2024, the same summer they brought in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to reshape the heart of their defence. Since then, their transfer focus has drifted elsewhere.

This window, the club’s energy has gone into strengthening Michael Carrick’s options at left-back and in central midfield. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are already through the door at Old Trafford, and United are still open to adding another midfielder before the deadline.

That shift in priority leaves United watching rather than driving the Tapsoba race for now. The defender is admired, but other areas are being treated as urgent.

Newcastle and Spurs turn up the heat

While United weigh up their next steps, Newcastle and Tottenham have moved closer to the action.

According to fussballdaten, both Premier League clubs are maintaining “close contact” with Tapsoba’s representatives as they explore the financial demands of any deal. Newcastle, in particular, are said to view the 27-year-old as a ready-made leader for their back line, someone to organise and dominate in a high defensive line.

Spurs have also long been in the market for a centre-back comfortable on the ball and aggressive without it. Tapsoba has been described as “tailor-made” for teams who want to build play at high tempo and defend big spaces – precisely the profile that appeals to attack-minded Premier League coaches.

Leverkusen’s rock with a long contract

Leverkusen’s reluctance is easy to understand. Tapsoba is not just a name on the teamsheet; he is a central figure in Xabi Alonso’s structure.

Last season, the Burkina Faso international made 29 Bundesliga appearances and chipped in with five goals – an impressive return for a central defender and a sign of his threat at set pieces and in advanced positions. Earlier this year he signed a new contract running all the way to 2031, a deal that gives Leverkusen huge leverage in any negotiations.

That long commitment has not silenced the noise. Reports in Germany say Tapsoba’s desire for a move has fuelled speculation around his future, with the coming weeks expected to be decisive as clubs firm up their late-window plans.

United’s wider transfer puzzle

United’s defensive interest sits within a broader rebuild under Carrick.

On the left flank, the club have pushed to strengthen at full-back and on the wing. Lewis Hall has been on their radar, but Newcastle have made it clear the defender is not for sale. A similar response has come from Club Brugge over Joaquin Seys, who has also been ruled off-limits.

Carrick has not hidden his appetite for more business before the window shuts.

“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.

“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.

“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”

The question now is simple: with rivals circling and a £43m price tag on the table, will United push for Tapsoba as part of that final transfer drive, or let Newcastle and Tottenham fight it out for one of Europe’s most coveted centre-backs?
