Manchester United Sign Goalkeeper Kit Margetson and Pursue Manu Kone

Manchester United have moved again in the market, confirming the arrival of highly rated young goalkeeper Kit Margetson while intensifying their push for Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

United add another Welsh goalkeeper

Margetson, 19, joins on a permanent deal from Swansea City after his contract with the Championship club expired. United have agreed a compensation package with Swansea, who are entitled to a fee after developing the player from Under-15 level through to the senior setup.

The Wales Under-21 international becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, following the free transfer signing of Karl Darlow from Leeds. It is a clear reset of the goalkeeping department beneath the first team, with United stockpiling competition and potential.

Margetson is not arriving cold. Last season he took his first real step into senior football on loan at Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and played a central role in the club’s push to European qualification. It was a testing, unforgiving environment – and he came through it.

He also broke into the Wales Under-21 side, making his debut against Belarus in March, adding international experience to a year that has accelerated his development.

United’s official announcement described him as an “exciting young goalkeeper” and confirmed the deal is subject to registration. Swansea, in their own statement, stressed his importance to their setup, noting that he had been with the club since Under-15 level and was part of the senior squad picture by the end of last season. He was named in the first-team matchday squad for a game against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign and had become a regular presence around the senior group.

There is a strong family thread to the move. Margetson is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who is now Wales’ goalkeeping coach and previously served as Swansea’s head of goalkeeping. Kit has grown up in and around professional dressing rooms; now he steps into one of the most scrutinised of all.

Swansea were quick to wish him well at Old Trafford, acknowledging both his progress through their ranks and his contribution on loan at Connah’s Quay. For United, it is a low-risk, high-upside addition in a specialist position where depth can quickly become an issue.

Midfield rebuild targets Manu Kone

While Margetson joins the goalkeeping stable, United’s recruitment drive in midfield is gathering pace.

After securing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the club are now pushing for a third addition in the middle of the pitch. Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport report that United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with Roma midfielder Manu Kone, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup.

The report claims United are ready to table an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m) for the 23-year-old, though they are far from alone in the chase. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Saudi side Al-Ahli are all credited with interest, setting up a potentially fierce battle for his signature.

If United do formalise that bid, it would underline the scale of their midfield overhaul: youth, legs, and a new spine to support the next phase of the project.

One deal is done, another is being lined up. United’s summer is starting to move.
