Manchester United Targets Sander Berge for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering speed, and Sander Berge is the latest name to land on INEOS’ desk.

With a deal already agreed for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva and at least one more midfielder targeted before the window shuts, United’s recruitment team has widened the net. Contacts have been made over West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Tyler Adams, once of Leeds United and now at Bournemouth, remains under consideration. Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest has been dropped from the shortlist, the £130m price tag judged excessive even in a summer of big spending.

Now the focus has swung to Fulham’s quietly outstanding Norwegian.

Berge back on United’s radar

According to The Athletic, Fulham’s Sander Berge is being actively assessed by United’s new co-owners as they look to add reliability and presence at the base of midfield. It is not the first time his name has been discussed at Old Trafford. United considered a move in 2024 when Berge left Burnley for Craven Cottage, only to watch Fulham steal in with a £25m deal.

Since then, the 28-year-old has built a compelling case. At Fulham he has become one of the Premier League’s most consistent defensive midfielders, a metronome with range who rarely dips below a seven out of ten. He screens, he recycles, he rarely wastes the ball. Managers love that sort of player; sporting directors love the value.

Berge’s situation, though, is far from straightforward. He is a regular for club and country, part of Norway’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, and tied to Fulham until 2029. The London club also hold an option to extend that deal by a further year. Any buyer will pay a premium for that security.

Fulham, for their part, are in no mood to be bullied. As The Athletic notes, they would expect to make a clear profit on the £25m they committed two years ago. In a market where top-level holding midfielders routinely change hands for far more, they know exactly what they have.

A Liverpool dream, a United opportunity?

There is an extra twist to this story, one that will not be lost on the Stretford End. Berge has never hidden where his Premier League affections once lay.

Back in November 2019, speaking to Norwegian outlet TV2, he laid it out plainly. Playing at Anfield, he said, was “a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians,” calling Liverpool “the best team [at the moment]” and the club with “the most fans.” He went further: “So I could certainly like to play at Anfield as often as possible.”

The admiration was mutual. During his time at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp was an open admirer. After a Champions League tie between Liverpool and KRC Genk, Klopp pulled Berge aside. “You are an interesting player, a very interesting player,” the German told him, as later reported by The Athletic on December 31, 2020.

Those words never led to a move. Liverpool looked elsewhere. Berge rebuilt his career step by step, first at Burnley, then Fulham. Now, as United and Liverpool continue their eternal tug-of-war at the top end of English football, it is the red of Manchester that could offer him his next stage.

For United, the question is simple: does Berge fit the new INEOS blueprint tightly enough to justify the outlay and the negotiation with a stubborn seller? For Berge, the decision would be starker still. Does a player who once dreamed of Anfield now anchor the midfield at Old Trafford instead?
