Manchester United Confirm Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro Exits

Manchester United drew a sharp line under a turbulent era on Wednesday, confirming Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro will all leave the club at the end of their contracts.

The retained list, usually a dry administrative note, read more like a closing chapter.

Sancho’s time at Old Trafford ends three years after his £73million arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, a transfer that once carried the weight of a new attacking blueprint. It never quite materialised.

The England international leaves having made just 83 appearances for United, his spell defined as much by absence as by influence. This past season he rebuilt his form and reputation on loan at Aston Villa, after earlier temporary returns to Dortmund and a stint at Chelsea.

Now 24, he steps into free agency with familiar suitors circling. Dortmund and Villa have both been linked with a permanent move, clubs that know exactly what kind of wide threat they would be signing.

On the opposite flank of United’s story, Malacia departs with a sense of what might have been.

The Dutch full-back, 26, arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 and initially injected energy and bite into the left side of defence. But injuries repeatedly cut him down just as he threatened to establish himself. He leaves with 50 appearances, a modest tally that doesn’t quite reflect the early promise of his United career.

If Sancho and Malacia represent unfinished projects, Casemiro’s exit closes a more defined arc.

The Brazilian midfielder, currently at the World Cup with Brazil, spent four seasons at Old Trafford after his move from Real Madrid. In that time he played 160 games and scored 26 goals, bringing steel, experience and moments of authority to a side often searching for both.

His arrival once symbolised United’s determination to accelerate back to the elite. His departure underlines how much rebuilding still lies ahead.

United confirmed all three will become free agents this summer, with their exits wrapped into Wednesday’s official retained list. The club’s statement was simple and formal, thanking Casemiro, Malacia and Sancho for their contributions and wishing them well for the future.

The names on a retained list don’t win titles. But the ones missing from it can tell you exactly how much a club is about to change.
