They had been heavily linked with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez earlier in the window, but that trail has gone cold. The word now is that Enzo will not be pursued. Madrid’s gaze has turned elsewhere – towards Manchester City and Spain’s metronome, Rodri.

Rodri is again delivering a superb World Cup campaign, the kind of stage where Madrid traditionally do their shopping. At 30 and entering the final year of his City contract, his future suddenly feels less nailed down than it once did. City, for their part, have just spent £116 million on Elliot Anderson, a significant outlay for a player who offers cover in that same holding role.

Rio Ferdinand has tracked Tchouameni’s rise closely. Back in 2022, the former United defender was already clear about the Frenchman’s ceiling, calling him “a superb talent” and highlighting his ability to produce “moments out of nowhere” while replacing Paul Pogba in the France XI – a task Ferdinand did not consider remotely straightforward. Tchouameni, he said then, had shown why he plays for Real Madrid: patience, talent, control, “everything you need.”

Now, with the possibility of an exit on the table, Ferdinand has sharpened his stance. If there is even “half a sniff” of Tchouameni leaving Madrid, he believes United must be the first at the door, refusing to let him “even talk to anybody else” before they get a deal done.
