Manchester United Pursue Aurélien Tchouaméni as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United have gone back to Real Madrid for Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to drop their pursuit of the French midfielder despite being rebuffed once already this summer.

Casemiro’s departure to Inter Miami has ripped a hole straight through the centre of United’s team. The Brazilian may have faded last season, but he was still the only true defensive specialist in that midfield. His exit has left United scrambling for an anchor, not just another body.

Tchouaméni sits right at the heart of that search.

According to The Sun, the France international looked set to stay at Real Madrid after interest from United in January and again at the start of the current window. Talks over a contract extension were even edging forward, a clear sign of how highly he is valued in Madrid.

United have come back anyway. They have asked again about Tchouaméni’s situation and his availability, keeping him firmly among the leading options as they look for a dedicated holding midfielder to reshape the balance of the side.

On paper, he is exactly what they want. Young. Physically imposing. Disciplined without the ball and calm with it. A midfielder who can sit, read danger, and let the attacking talent in front of him breathe.

That last point matters. André Santos and Youri Tielemans, the new arrivals at Old Trafford, lean naturally towards the attacking side of the game. Both want to play, to create, to break lines. Neither is a pure shield.

Tchouaméni is. He is a defensive midfielder by trade and by instinct, the sort of player United have lacked in his prime for years.

There is, however, a major obstacle. José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season and sees him as central to his plans. Real Madrid are not in the business of strengthening Manchester United for the sake of it, and prising a key piece away from a manager of Mourinho’s stature will be anything but straightforward.

United have identified their ideal anchor. Now they have to find out whether Real Madrid are willing to loosen their grip – or whether the search for Casemiro’s true heir is about to drag on into yet another window.
