Manchester United’s Pre-Season Challenges Ahead of PSG Match

Manchester United’s pre-season tour has finally caught up with the World Cup.

A new midfielder, delayed by Belgium’s run to the quarter-finals, is at last available to Michael Carrick, offering the new manager a fresh option in the middle of the pitch as United face PSG on Friday. His arrival has been a slow burn; now Carrick can actually put him on the grass.

Others are still paying the price for their summer exploits.

Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez remain out of contention, all three still observing the mandatory 21-day rest period after England and Argentina’s campaigns. Benjamin Sesko is sidelined too, still hampered by the shin injury that cut short his season last term and has yet to fully clear.

Carrick’s squad is also light in other areas. Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha have not travelled, though their absences are less alarming. Both are recovering from minor, unrelated illnesses, and United expect them to rejoin the group at their training camp in the Republic of Ireland next week. That camp will include a historic meeting with old rivals Leeds at Dublin’s Croke Park on Wednesday night, a fixture loaded with nostalgia and needle.

For now, attention turns to PSG and a 22-man group that underlines both opportunity and vulnerability.

Bruno Fernandes returns to headline the travelling party and restore some authority and creativity to the side. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are also back in the mix, with Mazraoui the only one of the trio set to start, giving Carrick a more balanced look on the flanks.

Up front, Bryan Mbeumo keeps his place after his match-winning turn against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, where his brace sealed a 2-1 victory and sharpened his claim to be Carrick’s go-to forward in pre-season. The teenager story, though, pauses for breath. Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel and fellow youngster Jim Thwaites, both handed senior debuts in that same game, drop out of the squad this time, a reminder of how quickly the ladder to the first team can appear and then pull back.

If the outfield picture looks manageable, the goalkeeping situation is anything but.

Altay Bayindir is absent after finalising a loan move to Celta Vigo on Friday, leaving United thin between the posts. With Lammens still unavailable and new signing Karl Darlow recovering from minor surgery carried out during his time at Leeds late last season, Carrick is forced to lean again on experience and youth in stark contrast.

Radek Vitek’s permanent move to Middlesbrough, a deal worth up to £14million, has further trimmed the depth chart. The result is a stark hierarchy: 40-year-old Tom Heaton starts once more, with Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath named as his understudies. It is a trio that speaks to the club’s current reality — a veteran holding the fort, youngsters learning on the job, and a manager hoping nothing goes wrong.

In midfield and defence, the injury list still bites.

Manuel Ugarte faces months out after surgery in July on the serious knee injury he suffered at the World Cup with Uruguay, a blow that robs United of bite and control in the centre of the pitch. Matthijs de Ligt is also not yet ready to return, still working his way back from a long-term back problem that has kept him out and forced Carrick to juggle his defensive options more than he would like.

So Carrick takes his squad into the PSG test with a blend of returning leaders, emerging prospects and conspicuous gaps. Pre-season is meant to be about rhythm and patterns, but for United it already feels like a stress test of depth and resilience.
