Two smart, technical additions, but Carrick wants one more midfielder through the door before the Premier League season kicks off. The spine is being rebuilt, and United know they are still one piece short.

That missing piece might be Kone. Or it might not be him at all.

A deal on the table – but not everyone is convinced

Roma are said to be holding firm on a €60 million (£51m) package for the 25-year-old, who was part of France’s World Cup squad that fell to Spain in the semi-finals earlier this month. Personal terms are not the issue; that side of the negotiation is understood to be in place. The problem lies in Manchester.

According to The Telegraph, the move does not have “universal backing” inside United’s recruitment department. Some key figures are unconvinced that Kone represents the right profile or value at that price, and that hesitation has stalled any breakthrough over a fee with Roma.

This is not the picture of a club charging decisively towards a marquee midfield signing. It is a debate, and a sharp one, over how United should spend what remains of their budget.

Alternatives on the radar

Kone is not the only name on the list. Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are both being monitored, with United weighing whether to go for Premier League-proven options who might come at a different cost and risk profile.

There is also a bigger, more glamorous possibility in the background: Aurelien Tchouameni. United are keeping a close eye on the France midfielder’s situation at Real Madrid and would consider a move if the European champions show any willingness to sell. For now, that remains hypothetical. But the fact United are even exploring that avenue shows how high the bar is for their next midfield addition.

The uncertainty does not end with Kone. The Telegraph also reports that there are internal reservations over a fresh move for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. United tried to sign the 22-year-old last summer, only to be met with a £100m valuation from Brighton. Baleba then produced an inconsistent campaign under Fabian Hurzeler, and that uneven form has clearly left a mark on United’s decision-makers.

Once again, the message is clear: United cannot afford another expensive misstep in midfield.

Carrick calm as pre-season gathers pace

While the recruitment debate rumbles on, Carrick’s players are quietly sharpening up on the pitch. United swept aside Rosenborg 5-0 in Norway on Friday in their latest pre-season outing, a performance that underlined both the quality already in the squad and the potential impact of one more high-level addition.

“I think we’re in a good place. I think there’s four weeks to go to the start and we’re gradually getting some boys back from the World Cup as we progress,” Carrick said afterwards.

He stressed rhythm, fitness, and patience rather than transfers, but his words still hinted at a group that expects to grow as the summer unfolds.

“A little bit of patience and time and trying to keep ahead and, as I said, keeping everyone fit but moving forward is a really good direction to go in. And as it stands right now, I think we’re in a pretty good place. So, the boys will get better as we go.”

The manager sounds relaxed. The recruitment team, less so.

A defining call in midfield

United’s pursuit of a third midfielder now feels like a test of the club’s new decision-making structure. Do they push hard for Kone at Roma’s price, back Carrick with a powerful, all-action option in his prime, and accept the financial risk? Or do they pivot – to Scott, Adams, a revived chase for Baleba at a lower fee, or the long-shot dream of prising Tchouameni away from Madrid?

The squad is taking shape. Pre-season scores are encouraging. But the next midfielder they choose will help define not just this window, but the direction of Carrick’s United.

They have time. They do not have much margin for error.
