Manchester United Pursue Manu Kone Amid Chelsea Interest

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and the next piece of the puzzle has a very clear name: Manu Kone.

After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, United are pushing to land a third central midfielder this summer and have stepped up contact for the Roma man, whose World Cup campaign with France ends in Saturday’s third-place play-off against England.

For weeks, Kone has kept everything on ice. The 25-year-old asked his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation (ESN) to park all transfer talks until after the tournament. ESN know this stage well; they also look after Bryan Mbeumo and France team-mates Aurelien Tchouameni, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan.

Now the pause button is about to be released.

United and Chelsea circle as World Cup ends

United are understood to have approached Kone’s entourage, sensing an opening as his World Cup winds down. Chelsea are in the frame too, having been credited with an interest during conversations with Roma over Alejandro Garnacho.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that both Premier League clubs are expected to lodge formal offers in the coming days. The player is described as keen and, crucially for United, willing to sign for them.

There is, however, a twist at the top of his wish list. Kone’s dream move is Paris Saint-Germain. The problem? A switch to the back-to-back Champions League winners is not currently on the table. With PSG seemingly out of the race, Corriere dello Sport claims United have moved into pole position.

A decision is not far away. The same report suggests that once France’s World Cup is over, Kone will turn fully to his future, with next week viewed as a potential turning point in the saga.

Roma’s price and Financial Fair Play pressure

Roma’s stance is clear. They want around £47 million for Kone, a fee that would bank them a profit of roughly £34m and, just as importantly, ease a growing Financial Fair Play headache.

UEFA fined the club £5m earlier this summer for breaching the limits of their settlement agreement and for allowing their squad cost ratio to climb above 70%. A substantial sale, such as Kone, would go a long way towards closing that chapter.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the reality. Speaking to Radio Rai 1, he laid out the financial backdrop that is shaping Roma’s window.

“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team. It's undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years.

“I’d hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

Those are not the words of a coach expecting to keep all of his prized assets.

A midfielder in his moment

Gasperini also knows exactly what he might be losing. On Kone specifically, his assessment was pointed.

“Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He's having a great World Cup.

“He didn't play with the France national team last year, but now he's been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he's put in.”

That rise with France has changed the temperature around any deal. This is no longer just a promising Serie A midfielder; this is a player starting in the biggest international tournament, showing he can handle the stage United demand.

Roma know his value. United and Chelsea know the opportunity. Kone, at last, is ready to choose.
