Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Casemiro Out, Ederson In

Manchester United are preparing for a summer of major surgery in midfield, and the plan is starting to take shape.

Two new arrivals are moving closer. One stalwart is being shown the door. A £50m gamble is being quietly written off. Old Trafford’s engine room is about to look very different.

Casemiro out, rebuild in

United have decided not to renew Casemiro’s contract, allowing the Brazilian to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. On the pitch, he has delivered this year, anchoring midfield with the authority you would expect from a serial Champions League winner. Off it, though, the numbers are harder to ignore: 34 years old, big wages, and a squad in desperate need of younger legs.

Manuel Ugarte is set to follow him out. Signed for £50.5 million and billed as a long-term solution, he has not come close to justifying the fee. United are now preparing to cash in and cut their losses.

Those exits clear the decks for a rebuild the club can no longer delay.

Ederson deal advanced

The first piece of that rebuild is close. Ederson, the powerful Atalanta midfielder, looks set to arrive before anyone else.

talkSPORT report that United are “closing in” on a deal worth up to £43m. The Brazilian has already given the move the green light and is ready to sign a five-year contract, a clear sign that both club and player see this as a long-term partnership rather than a stopgap.

Negotiations with Atalanta are described as being at an advanced stage. United have moved decisively here, aware that dynamic, ball-winning midfielders with European pedigree do not stay on the market for long.

If all goes to plan, Ederson becomes the first new face in a remodelled core.

Mateus Fernandes: United push to the front

The second target is younger, cheaper than first feared, and attracting serious attention across Europe.

United have turned to Mateus Fernandes of West Ham after accepting they are likely to miss out on top target Elliot Anderson, who is expected to join Manchester City. According to CaughtOffside, United now “lead the race” for Fernandes and have emerged as the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives.

They are not alone. Arsenal are interested and see the Portuguese midfielder as a possible replacement for Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation.

The difference is groundwork. United have pushed hardest, and that matters. They have already laid out a framework for a deal and, crucially, can offer Fernandes the chance to line up alongside his compatriot and namesake, Bruno Fernandes, in the Champions League – something the 21-year-old is said to be eager to do.

Earlier suggestions put his price as high as £80m. The reality looks more favourable. Following West Ham’s relegation, CaughtOffside claim he is available for €50–60m (£43–52m), a figure far more palatable for a club trying to reshape an entire midfield in one window.

The plan is clear: secure Ederson, then move hard for Fernandes.

A third signing on the horizon?

The shake-up might not stop there.

United are also considering a third midfield addition if the budget allows. On May 20, the Daily Mail’s United correspondent Chris Wheeler reported that the club are planning a £20m move for a backup option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles among the targets.

Three out, potentially three in. Experience traded for energy, mobility and resale value.

United’s hierarchy know they cannot keep patching the same problems with short-term fixes. This summer, the midfield is being ripped up and reimagined. The only question now is whether the deals they are driving towards can finally give Old Trafford a core worthy of its ambitions.
