Manchester United Targets Midfield Overhaul with João Fernandes

Manchester United are moving into the summer window with a clear plan and a tight grip on their wallet. The priority is the spine of the team, and at the heart of that sits a bold target: three new midfielders – with 21-year-old João Fernandes among the names rising quickly up their list.

United intend to make contact soon to formally register their interest in the West Ham talent, whose situation has changed dramatically since the London club’s relegation from the Premier League. Inside Old Trafford, there is a growing belief that Fernandes will be on the market, and United want to be at the front of the queue when the real negotiations begin.

They have already sketched out what they think he is worth. The valuation sits around the £50 million mark, and the club are now working to understand whether a deal in that region is realistic. The message from United’s hierarchy is clear: they want value, not a bidding war.

West Ham may have other ideas.

People close to the London club expect them to actively encourage more suitors, hoping to drag heavyweight rivals into the conversation and push the price higher. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and if both circle seriously, the numbers could move quickly.

United, though, are trying to set a different tone this summer.

Their push for Fernandes runs alongside advanced efforts to land Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. An early agreement is looking increasingly likely, with sources indicating that a fee below £35 million is on the table. Inside United, that potential deal is seen as a template: smart, early, and sensibly priced.

That same stance is shaping their view of other targets. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains a player admired at Old Trafford, but the £100 million valuation coming out of the south coast has been met with resistance. United are determined not to overpay and are prepared to walk away if the numbers stay inflated. Unless Brighton soften their stance, Baleba may stay as an idea rather than a live pursuit.

The recruitment team are not short of alternatives.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has impressed decision-makers, while Sandro Tonali at Newcastle United and Aurelien Tchouameni at Real Madrid are also on the list of midfielders admired by the club. Any move for that calibre of player, though, will hinge on both availability and price, with United refusing to be dragged into auctions that defined previous eras.

All of this unfolds against a backdrop of uncertainty in attack.

Plans to bring in a left-sided forward are currently on hold while Marcus Rashford’s future remains unresolved. His position at United is anything but settled, and the picture has been complicated by Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona, which has clouded the Catalan club’s immediate attacking plans.

Rashford still has hope that a permanent move to Barca can be revived. The Spanish giants retain an interest, but as ever with Barcelona, the numbers will dictate everything. Their ability to structure a deal that satisfies both United and the player will decide whether this long-running story turns into one of the summer’s defining transfers, or fades into another what-if in a window where United are refusing to blink first.
