Behind the scenes, Old Trafford’s new regime is moving with intent but not desperation in their pursuit of West Ham United’s gifted Portuguese midfielder. Reports last week suggested an opening offer was imminent, yet as of now no formal bid has landed in east London.

United are probing the deal, not plunging into it.

A £100m valuation for a £40m signing

West Ham’s stance is stark. They plucked Fernandes from Southampton last summer for just under £40m. Twelve months on, they now see him as a £100m footballer.

On his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano outlined the standoff. United, he says, are in “direct contact” with the player’s camp, with Fernandes “very keen” on the move to Old Trafford. Personal terms are not the issue; those talks are said to be progressing smoothly.

The numbers between the clubs are another matter.

Romano reports that West Ham’s ideal price is £100m, but “the expectation is that they could close the deal around £85m, not less than this.” That figure has become the unofficial floor. United, for their part, are pushing to drag it down.

They are negotiating. They are also refusing to be hurried.

Financial pressure meets transfer brinkmanship

West Ham’s hardline approach jars with their own financial reality. In February, the club publicly acknowledged a £104.2m loss for the last financial year and admitted they would need to sell players in the summer, even if they stayed in the Premier League.

They did not stay. Relegation to the Championship has only tightened the screw.

Yet in the market, West Ham are acting like a club determined to extract every last pound from a prized asset. Fernandes is 21, a creative hub and one of the few bright spots in a bleak season. From their perspective, he is the player you cash in on to reset the balance sheet.

United know that. They also know they are not alone.

Other clubs are circling, aware that an elegant, high-ceiling playmaker with Premier League experience rarely comes onto the market at 21. As interest grows, so does the risk of a late hijack. For now, United are trying to hold their nerve.

INEOS sets the tone

Inside Old Trafford, there is quiet confidence. According to Theatre of Red’s Shaun Connolly, United remain “confident of a deal” for Fernandes, but the message from INEOS is clear: they will not be dictated to.

INEOS “will not allow the selling party to dictate the matter,” Connolly reports. The player’s desire to join and the enthusiasm of United’s staff to work with him are not in doubt. The word from within is simple: patience.

That patience, though, has limits. The longer United wait, the more oxygen they give to rival suitors. The longer West Ham hold out, the more their own financial situation looms over negotiations.

Somewhere between £85m and what United consider a “composed” figure lies the deal.

For now, this is a transfer defined by restraint rather than fireworks. United are trying to reshape their squad without repeating the mistakes of past windows. West Ham are trying to prove that, even under financial strain and Championship football, they will not be bullied out of their best talent.

The pressure will build as the summer wears on. At some point, one side will blink. The only real question is whether it will be the club that needs to sell, or the club that has finally decided it will no longer overpay.
