Manchester United Eye Manu Kone After Tchouameni Contract

Manchester United are preparing to revive their pursuit of Manu Kone after AS Roma set a clear price for the French midfielder, with their “dream” alternative Aurelien Tchouameni now off the market.

Tchouameni dream fades

United’s recruitment team were hit with a major setback when it emerged that Tchouameni had agreed a new contract with Real Madrid. The 26-year-old, long viewed at Old Trafford as the ideal successor to Casemiro, has chosen to commit his prime years to the Bernabeu.

There had been quiet confidence in Manchester that Madrid might cash in. The Spanish giants have been heavily linked with big-money midfield moves, including Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, and the feeling was that a substantial offer for Tchouameni could help fund that rebuild.

Then came a key intervention. After talks with Jose Mourinho, who is set to return to the Madrid dugout 13 years after his first spell, Tchouameni opted to stay. The message from the Spanish capital is now clear: he is central to their plans.

Inside United, there is a belief that Tchouameni’s agent – who also represents Kone – used the Premier League club’s interest as leverage in negotiations, even if credible voices insist a sale would genuinely have been on the table had Madrid opened the door.

Once that door slammed shut, United moved quickly.

United pivot to Kone

Attention has turned firmly to Manu Kone, Tchouameni’s teammate in France’s World Cup squad and, crucially, a player whose future is far less settled.

According to TEAMtalk, United are “plotting a move” after being informed of Roma’s valuation: around £50 million for the 25-year-old. That figure has immediately put Kone into serious consideration at Old Trafford.

Roma’s stance is rooted in necessity. Despite securing a comfortable third-place finish in Serie A and a return to the Champions League, the club must raise funds to stay on the right side of UEFA’s financial rules. Inside the Stadio Olimpico, Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset.

Intermediaries have already begun sounding out the market. United are not alone in the conversation, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all having been contacted as potential destinations for the midfielder.

Kone is understood to be open to the Premier League. Previous reporting has even suggested he is “very keen” on a move to United, a detail that will not be lost on INEOS as they reshape the club’s sporting project.

Profile built for England

On the pitch, Kone offers exactly the sort of profile United have lacked in recent years: a powerful, combative midfielder who relishes duels but can also carry the ball through the thirds.

Standing at 6ft 1in, he combines athleticism with clean technique, a blend that has attracted scouts across Europe. His performances at the World Cup only sharpened that interest, with his displays described as having “enhanced his growing reputation” among elite clubs.

One moment in particular will interest United’s decision-makers. In France’s 3-0 group-stage win over Iraq, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, with Didier Deschamps trusting him to fill the same role at the base of midfield. United appear to be following that same line of thinking: if he is good enough to be Tchouameni’s stand-in for France, he can be Casemiro’s successor in Manchester.

INEOS weigh up midfield rebuild

INEOS have also been alerted to the potential availability of another Real Madrid midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga, but the preference, according to TEAMtalk, is to treat Kone as a “serious option” to reinforce Michael Carrick’s engine room.

The logic is straightforward. Kone is entering his peak years, has already proved he can operate at the highest level, and fits the physical and tactical demands of English football. Roma’s need to sell gives United a defined price point and a clear path, if they choose to walk it.

With Tchouameni now locked into Madrid and United’s midfield in urgent need of renewal, the question is no longer whether they will move for a new anchor.

It is whether they are ready to make Kone the cornerstone of their next era.
