Manchester United's Left-Back Dilemma: Robinson as Alternative to Hall

Manchester United are drawing up a Plan B at left-back – and it leads straight to Craven Cottage.

With Lewis Hall effectively locked away by Newcastle United, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has emerged as the alternative target under serious consideration at Old Trafford, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

Hall the priority – but the door is bolted

United’s summer business has already seen Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow arrive on permanent deals, but the recruitment drive is not finished. A midfielder remains on the wishlist, yet the growing concern inside the club is far more specific: cover – and competition – for Luke Shaw.

Hall is the name they want. Young, homegrown, progressive on the ball and already Premier League-tested, the Newcastle left-back has been identified as the leading option.

The problem? Newcastle have no intention of playing seller any longer.

Crook revealed that United are prepared to go big to get him.

“United’s interest remains,” he said on talkSPORT. “We’re told they’re willing to pay up to £60million to prise Hall away from the North East.”

Under normal circumstances, that kind of offer would turn heads. But these are not normal circumstances on Tyneside.

Newcastle have already cashed in heavily. Crook pointed to the numbers: around £70m banked for Anthony Gordon, £100m for Sandro Tonali and another £75m with Bruno Guimaraes heading to Arsenal. The financial pressure has eased. The need to sell has gone.

David Ornstein has already reported that Hall will not be leaving St James’ Park this summer, and Crook echoed the sense that Newcastle see this as a moment to draw a line.

“You wonder if the hierarchy there might see this Lewis Hall situation as a chance to make a statement – ‘The shop window is closed, we’re not selling any more of our star players’,” Crook suggested.

For United, that turns an ambitious chase into what Crook called “a difficult deal” – bordering on impossible.

Robinson moves into focus

When one door slams shut in a transfer window, another usually creaks open. In this case, it’s Antonee Robinson’s.

The Fulham and USA international has been flagged internally as a serious option if United cannot break Newcastle’s resistance over Hall.

“Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international,” Crook said. “Their experienced Premier League campaigner would probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall. He’s someone I’m told is on Manchester United’s radar as well.”

Robinson brings something different to the table. At 26, he is far more seasoned than Hall, with multiple Premier League campaigns behind him and a key role for his national team. He would not arrive as a development project. He would arrive to play.

Crucially, he would also arrive at a fraction of the £60m fee being discussed for Hall, freeing up budget for the midfielder United still want before the window shuts.

Shaw exposed, youngsters not yet trusted

The urgency at left-back is clear. Luke Shaw remains the only established first-choice option in the squad, and his injury record in recent seasons hardly inspires total confidence over a long campaign.

Harry Amass has impressed during pre-season, but the message from Old Trafford is that a loan move is still the most likely next step in his development rather than a full-time promotion into the senior rotation.

Patrick Dorgu is another option on the books, yet those inside the club see him as more effective higher up the pitch than as a traditional left-back.

Strip all that away and United are one Shaw setback away from a structural problem on the flank. That is why Hall was identified. That is why Robinson is now being watched closely.

Newcastle’s stance has forced United to think differently. The question now is whether they pivot decisively towards Robinson or gamble on Shaw’s fitness and the promise of youth in a season where margins will be thin and patience even thinner.
