Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits Roadblock with Joaquin Seys

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has hit a major roadblock, with Club Brugge making it clear that Joaquin Seys is going nowhere this summer.

The 21-year-old, one of the standout young full-backs in Europe last season, has been high on United’s radar as they look to strengthen Michael Carrick’s options before the window closes. But in Belgium, the message is blunt: Seys is not for sale.

Brugge dig in over Seys

Seys has started all three of Brugge’s matches this season, picking up where he left off after an impressive 2023/24 campaign that brought 55 appearances, five goals and eight assists. He is now deeply embedded in the side, and Brugge are treating him as untouchable.

Reports in Belgium say Brugge are prepared to turn down a club-record offer to keep him. United have not yet lodged a formal bid, but even if they matched the £34million Arsenal paid earlier in the summer for Christos Tzolis, it would not move the needle.

The stance is firm. Seys stays.

That will frustrate not only United. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Benfica and Porto have all been linked with the Belgium international, but any move now looks like one for a future window rather than this one.

Leko’s reality and Brugge’s resolve

Brugge boss Ivan Leko has previously admitted the club can struggle to resist huge offers, a familiar reality for a selling league. Seys still has three years left on his contract, though, and this time Brugge are prepared to hold their ground.

“If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no. The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season,” Leko said, speaking about the club’s transfer position in general.

“The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.”

For United, that last line stings. September is exactly when they want Seys in Carrick’s dressing room, not still driving Brugge’s left flank.

United’s left-back puzzle

The need at Old Trafford is obvious. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, once seen as a long-term option at full-back, is now being used higher up the pitch. Carrick’s depth on the left side of defence is thin, and the club have been working the market to fix it.

Seys is now the second left-sided defender this summer to effectively be taken off the table. Newcastle have already knocked back United’s attempts to sign Lewis Hall, another player they view as central to their own project.

So United must pivot.

Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas is one name that remains very much alive. The 19-year-old has a release clause in his contract, making any negotiations more straightforward and the deal more attainable than the Seys chase has become.

United still want a left-back before the window slams shut. The question now is simple: with Seys locked down in Brugge and others deemed untouchable, where do they turn next?
