Manchester United Eye Ismaila Sarr as Versatile Forward

Manchester United have set their sights on Crystal Palace star Ismaila Sarr as they hunt a versatile forward this summer – but prising him out of south London will be anything but straightforward.

INEOS’ new regime at Old Trafford went into this window with a clear brief: find an attacker who can play across the frontline, stretch teams from wide areas, but also carry the load through the middle when required. Inside United, Sarr has been pushed to the front of that conversation.

Sarr’s breakout season puts Palace in control

The Senegal international is coming off the best year of his career. For club and country, he has gone from dangerous winger to fully fledged match-winner.

At Crystal Palace, he drove their remarkable UEFA Conference League triumph, finishing the tournament with nine goals and collecting the Player of the Season award. He backed that up in the Premier League, adding nine more in the league to close out the campaign with 20 goals in all competitions.

Those numbers have changed his status. He is no longer just a lively wide man. He is a leading asset – and Palace know it.

Signed in 2024 for under £15 million, Sarr now sits on a contract with three years left to run. Palace, emboldened by his form and that long deal, are understood to want more than triple their original outlay before they even think about doing business. With that kind of leverage, they can afford to be stubborn.

United make their move

His form has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.

United have now made contact with Sarr’s representatives, registering their interest and seeking clarity on his situation. The 28-year-old was already on United’s radar before the World Cup in North America, but his performances there hardened the admiration into intent.

Senegal crashed out against Belgium on Wednesday, throwing away a 2-0 lead in the final minutes, yet Sarr still left the tournament with four goals and one assist. On the biggest stage, he looked at home.

More importantly for United’s recruitment team, he showed he can operate as a central striker as well as from the flanks. That ability to switch roles, to lead the line or attack from wide, has pushed INEOS to step up their interest. The problem is obvious: versatility at that level rarely comes cheap.

Rashford uncertainty and Zirkzee exit sharpen the need

United’s summer blueprint still places the signing of at least two new midfielders at the top of the agenda. Even so, the need for a flexible forward has only intensified.

Joshua Zirkzee is expected to move on, leaving a gap in the attacking rotation. Marcus Rashford’s future remains unresolved. As previously revealed, there is a very real scenario in which Rashford ends up back at Old Trafford if a permanent transfer cannot be agreed, even though the club’s preference is still to find a solution away from Manchester.

That uncertainty forces United to keep scanning the market.

West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville has also been tracked closely in recent weeks after an impressive World Cup of his own. He fits the profile, he fits the age bracket, and he has admirers inside the club.

Yet the sense now is that Sarr has edged ahead of the Dutchman on United’s attacking wishlist. The World Cup only underlined why.

Palace hold the cards – and Juventus are watching

If United want Sarr, they will have to go through Crystal Palace and their new head coach Pierre Sage. After a season in which Sarr delivered a European trophy and then shone at the World Cup, Sage has every reason to make it clear he does not want to lose his star attacker.

Palace’s stance is strengthened not just by contract length and form, but by the level of interest building around the player. Juventus are among the clubs monitoring Sarr, having tracked him closely throughout last season. Any hint that Palace might entertain offers will not go unnoticed in Turin.

That kind of competition only pushes the price in one direction.

Ratcliffe’s financial discipline meets a big-ticket target

All of this plays out against a stricter financial backdrop at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined to rein in transfer fees and wages, imposing a more disciplined structure on recruitment.

That approach has already had consequences. United missed out on Mateus Fernandes, with new details emerging over what they were prepared to offer and why the deal slipped away.

Now the same financial framework will be tested again.

Sarr is exactly the type of multi-functional forward United have been chasing for years. He is in peak form, entering his prime, and proven at Premier League and European level. Palace, though, are in no mood to sell cheap.

United must decide: do they bend their new rules for a player who fits the blueprint almost perfectly, or walk away and watch a Champions League rival like Juventus step into the space they created?
