Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is being stripped back and rebuilt, and two more pieces are about to move off the board.

Radek Vítek is set to join Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14 million, while fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is closing in on a season-long loan to Celta Vigo. For a position that once looked clogged, United are suddenly trimming with purpose.

Vítek cashes in on Bristol City breakthrough

Vítek’s rise has been steady rather than spectacular, but last season changed the conversation. After a standout campaign with Bristol City, the 22-year-old is on the verge of stepping into a promotion-chasing project at Middlesbrough, beaten Championship playoff finalists last term.

He joined United from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 as a promising Czech prospect and quietly did the hard yards: temporary spells at Accrington and Blau-Weiss Linz, learning the angles, taking the hits. It was at Ashton Gate, though, where he truly flourished and convinced clubs higher up the food chain that he was ready for more.

Middlesbrough, under Michael Carrick, see him as part of a reshaped core. Carrick’s side are actively tuning their squad for another tilt at promotion, and the goalkeeping position is being retooled around number one Senne Lammens and summer signing Karl Darlow, who arrived on a free.

The structure of the Vítek deal underlines how highly United still rate him. The agreement with Boro is worth up to £14m with bonuses and includes a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent. Crucially, United have matching rights and a buy-back option, a clear safety net in case Vítek’s development accelerates on Teesside.

Bayindir heads to Spain in search of minutes

While Vítek departs permanently, Bayindir’s move carries a different tone: a reset rather than a farewell.

The Turkey international, signed from Fenerbahce in 2023, has largely lived in the shadows at Old Trafford, serving as back-up and rarely dislodging those ahead of him. At 28, he needs games, not warm-ups.

A loan to Celta Vigo is close to completion, with the LaLiga side set to cover his wages for the season. The deal is performance-based too, with bonuses attached to how he fares in Spain. Celta will also hold an option to make the move permanent, reportedly at £3.5m, and a sell-on clause would be written in if they trigger that option.

For United, it’s a pragmatic move: offload salary, potentially build value, and keep a degree of control over the player’s future. For Bayindir, it’s a lifeline to regular football in a league that often rewards technically sound, confident goalkeepers.

A new-look hierarchy between the posts

All this comes against the backdrop of a broader reset in goal. Senne Lammens has the number one shirt. Karl Darlow, the experienced Wales international, has arrived to support and push him, his free transfer following Andre Onana’s return to Trabzonspor on loan.

With Vítek heading to Middlesbrough and Bayindir preparing for Vigo, United’s once-crowded goalkeeping stable suddenly looks streamlined, almost minimalist. The club have traded depth for clarity, future-proofing with buy-back clauses while trusting Lammens and Darlow to carry the immediate load.
