Carrick will have seen more than just numbers on the board. He saw teenagers handling the intensity of facing a side already at full match fitness, away from home, and dictating the contest.

Santos sharp, standards set

Amid the flurry of goals, one of the new faces quietly reinforced first impressions. Andrey Santos again looked composed and sharp in the first half, knitting play together and giving United a steady platform in midfield. He didn’t need a goal to stand out; his control and decision-making did that for him.

For a squad still without many of its World Cup stars, this performance carried weight. The seniors who travelled did their jobs. The new arrivals slotted in. The youngsters did more than fill gaps — they drove the game.

United leave Norway with a 5-0 win, a clean bill of confidence, and a very different mood from that Wrexham defeat.
