Manchester United Eyes Aurelien Tchouameni Amid Chelsea Link

Manchester United’s pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni has moved up a gear, with wages no longer viewed as an obstacle and Chelsea potentially holding the key to unlocking a deal with Real Madrid.

United have identified the France international as their ideal successor to Casemiro at the base of midfield, a cornerstone piece in a wider rebuild designed to hand Michael Carrick a group capable of competing with Europe’s elite. A £35 million agreement for Atalanta’s Ederson is already in place, but Old Trafford powerbrokers are not stopping there.

Three midfield signings are on the table for next season. Ederson is one. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is being lined up as an alternative to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who could instead end up at Tottenham. The third pillar is the No 6 role – and that is where Tchouameni and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba come into sharp focus.

Wages no longer the sticking point

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano underlined that Tchouameni is firmly on United’s list, while warning that his current Real Madrid salary could complicate matters. That concern has now eased.

Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, speaking on The United Stand, made it clear United are ready to go big on the 24-year-old’s personal terms.

“Tchouameni’s wages are not an issue in my opinion,” Jacobs said. “Manchester United would be prepared to make a player like that one of their top earners.

“They’re not in that territory of £300,000 [per week] Rashford, Sancho-type wages, but nor is Tchouameni by the way.

“So I’m not aware that personal terms with Tchouameni would be a problem.”

In other words, if Tchouameni leaves Madrid, United are confident they can sit at the same table as any suitor when it comes to salary. The battle will be decided elsewhere.

Chelsea, Enzo and the Real Madrid equation

The real question now lies in the Spanish capital. How do Real Madrid shape their midfield for the next cycle, and what kind of money do they need to do it?

Jacobs pointed straight at the hinge point: Enzo Fernandez.

“The challenge is, what midfielder do Real sign? Is it in Tchouameni’s position? Even if it isn’t, do they bring in enough funds elsewhere, or do they need one big sale to make a play at Enzo Fernandez?” he said.

“Jose Mourinho has said he wants Enzo Fernandez, and this is why talks are expected to begin between Chelsea and Real Madrid.

“So I doubt Man Utd would be walking away from a prospective Tchouameni deal [based] on wages.

“I think they would hold some optimism that if the player genuinely becomes available, it’s a viable move.”

Madrid are confident of landing Fernandez, a stance revealed earlier on Friday and one that could ripple across the Premier League. If Chelsea open the door for Enzo to head to the Bernabeu, Madrid may need to cash in on a major asset. Tchouameni instantly becomes the obvious candidate.

That scenario would not just encourage United. Liverpool, long-term admirers of the Frenchman, would also be watching closely.

A £70m question for United

For United, the numbers are clear. Around £70 million is expected to be required to tempt Madrid into a sale. In the current market, that fee for a player widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world would look shrewd rather than extravagant.

United’s hierarchy know this is the kind of signing that can redefine a spine. Ederson to add legs and thrust. A young option such as Alex Scott to inject creativity and depth. And at the base, a controller of Tchouameni’s calibre, shielding the defence and setting the tempo.

The money is there. The willingness to pay top-bracket wages is there. Now the entire operation hangs on a familiar transfer domino: whether Real Madrid decide that to bring in Enzo Fernandez, they must sacrifice Aurelien Tchouameni.

If that call is made in Madrid, Old Trafford will be ready.
