Manchester City vs Arsenal: Community Shield Showdown

Enzo Maresca’s first shot at a trophy as Manchester City manager arrives on Sunday – and it comes with a familiar edge. Arsenal again stand in their way, this time in the Community Shield, the traditional launch point for the English season and an early test of nerve and ideas.

City earned their place by winning last season’s FA Cup in Pep Guardiola’s farewell campaign, even as Arsenal edged them to the Premier League title. Now the Guardiola era has given way to something new, and Maresca’s City are still taking shape. Three games in, the picture is only just coming into focus: an opening draw against Inter on his unofficial debut, followed by 3–1 wins over the K-League All-Stars and Atlético Madrid.

This, though, is different. Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, a first glimpse of silverware, and a meeting with the champions who outlasted them over 38 games. Maresca will want a performance that announces his City, not just inherits Guardiola’s.

He will have to do it without a full deck. Key names are missing from his preferred XI and Rodri, linked strongly with Barcelona and nursing a back injury, is out altogether. That absence alone changes the feel of City’s midfield and the balance of the team.

Man City Predicted XI vs. Arsenal

  • GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma
This would probably have been James Trafford’s stage before his $60.5 million move to Leeds United. Gerónimo Rulli has arrived from Marseille to act as the new deputy, but this is a statement fixture and Donnarumma is expected to start. Maresca will want authority behind a reshaped back line, and few goalkeepers project it quite like the Italian.
  • RB: Matheus Nunes
Nunes looks set for an intriguing duel with new Arsenal signing Christos Tzolis. The Greek winger has already produced three goal contributions under Mikel Arteta and will test Nunes’ concentration and defensive instincts. For Maresca, using Nunes on the right offers an extra ball-carrier to break Arsenal’s press, but he cannot switch off for a second.
  • CB: Abdukodir Khusanov
City have stripped back their centre-back department this summer, with Nathan Aké and John Stones among the notable departures. That exodus opens the door for Abdukodir Khusanov. The Community Shield may not be a major final, but it is a high-profile stage, and Maresca appears ready to trust the aspiring defender with meaningful minutes early in the season.
  • CB: Rúben Dias
Dias no longer dominates quite as relentlessly as he did at his peak, yet his influence remains enormous. His leadership, organisation and presence still anchor this City defence. With a newer partner alongside him and Arsenal’s movement to handle, Dias becomes the reference point, the voice that holds the line together.
  • LB: Joško Gvardiol
On the left, Maresca is likely to lean on reliability. Nico O’Reilly is not expected to be risked from the start, and Rayan Aït-Nouri may have to wait. Against Arsenal’s pace and trickery out wide, Gvardiol’s blend of aggression and composure should appeal. He can step inside to form a back three in possession or drive out to meet wingers early, a key part of protecting Donnarumma’s flank.
  • CM: Nico González
Rodri’s absence removes the usual metronome from City’s midfield and, with it, some of the noise around his Barcelona links. Into that void steps Nico González. He is the likely choice to sit at the base, knitting play together and shielding the defence. The role is unforgiving: one slip against Arsenal’s runners and the back four are exposed. Maresca will learn a lot about González’s temperament here.
  • CM: Mateo Kovačić
Alongside him, Mateo Kovačić brings drive and experience. At 32, he has already logged a third of last season’s total appearances in Maresca’s preseason schedule, a stark contrast to the injury-hit 2025–26 campaign that restricted him to just nine outings. This feels like a reset. If City are to control the rhythm against Arsenal, Kovačić’s ability to carry the ball through pressure will be central.
  • RW: Savinho
On the right wing, Savinho enters with a point to prove. Linked again with Tottenham Hotspur and frustrated by a lack of meaningful minutes, he now finds a fresh start under Maresca. The Brazilian’s trickery and directness give City a different edge in wide areas. Opportunities have been scarce; he cannot afford to let this one drift by.
  • AM: Phil Foden
Through the middle, Phil Foden carries both expectation and a hint of frustration. Left out of England’s World Cup squad, he still produced 21 goal involvements for City last season but too often left supporters wanting more in the biggest moments. This campaign offers a chance at reinvention. Maresca will look to him as the creative heartbeat, the player who can pierce Arsenal’s structure with one touch or turn.
  • LW: Antoine Semenyo
On the left, Antoine Semenyo has simply continued where he finished. Four assists already in preseason underline his form and his understanding of when to attack space and when to feed teammates. Versatile, industrious and increasingly productive, he has proved an outstanding piece of business. Under new management, he looks ready to climb another level.

City’s shape is evolving, the personnel shifting, the old certainties gone. Arsenal, as champions, offer a sharp early measurement of where Maresca’s ideas truly stand. By Sunday night in Cardiff, the first real outlines of his Manchester City will be clear for everyone to see.
